Hi all was there A 747 in shannon today, i was driving to ennis today and around 2.40ish a large bird caught my eye, so i pulled in a grabbed the binocks from the dash, it was kind of hard to see as i was looking over my shoulder out the window but looked very like a 747, couldn't get a callsign from the scanner as i had it set to scan from freq to freq, the only callsign i noticed was speedbird 1 :D and that isn't a 747.. but i'm guessing it was the same one i heard requesting a 3 degree climbout as it passed rather low

    Cheers Shane.

I think Speed bird 001 is the business only A319 from LCY to JFK...

AFAIK Speedbird 1 is now the callsign for one of the BA all business class flights ex-London City to JFK.

They have smaller planes, A319 (?) to cope with London City, and a quick look at their timetables shows them leaving London at 12.50, so being near Shannon at 2.30 would be about right.

ya speedbird one is the sallsign for london city to jfk, i was just saying that was the only callsign i could make out at the time (eg to help give a timeframe, Speedbird 1 was approaching shannon) but the aircraft i saw was deffinetly a large aircraft

I saw this aircraft departing Shannon the other morning at approx. 8.30am.
It looked so big even the children in the back seat pointed it out.

As far as I know that Evergreen 747 is a tanker craft, its being in and out of Shannon for quite a while now.

I don't think so it looked to have a plain white livery, really its a stab in the dark trying to find out about it.... I was just wondering as i thought 747s in shannon were getting kinda rare.

Just on a side note and not to start another topic, whats to min alt for a commercial jet... one passed my house the other day a DC 10 i think and it looked to be about 1500 ft up (i live just outside the shannon approach boundary, we get GA and Rescue 115 out this way at that height and below).

I saw a white one recently, looked like a 747-200, I believe it was a Southern Air like below:

Depending on company rules and regs (SOP's) the absolute minimum is 500 ft or 1500ft over a congested area.

Unless its landing - then obviously its gona have to hit the ground sometime:D.

Being commercial jet traffic then it should have been following the published instrument approach. Minimum decent alt is 3000ft from about 9 nm - so depending on where you live the DC 10 could well have been at 1500ft.

Of course if the guy was doing a visual approach then all bets are off depending on the co-pilots skills:p

You mean softely kiss the ground not HIT :D , ya i live just outside the approach boundary so he deff wasn't on an approach, i just assumed he was instructed that low as he was coming in from the east and aircraft were using 24 for take-offs ..
