I'd say the ones at the V&A Waterfront are your best bet. of course, be very careful when you're getting to/from there.

I'm staying here during the World Cup. It was recommended to me.

Most of the hotels should have in-room safes, but I guess they will be too small for your purposes. As said above, there are lots of hotels in the V&A area, but they are generally quite expensive, and it's certainly not the only place to stay. You will find plenty of hotels (some new ones being built for the world cup) in the general city area which are perfectly safe and secure. I'd suggest you check out tripadvisor.com for reviews.

The hotels in Cape Town are generally of a good standard and secure. While you have to exercise general caution in Cape Town, like any big city, you do not have to be obsessive, it's generally quite a safe city (I'm Irish, living there for the last 4 years). The average tourist will never end up anywhere near the dodgy areas of Cape Town.

Not sure what your budget is but the Victoria & Alfred Hotel is a great hotel to stay on the Waterfront.

They have safes in the rooms. Stayed there for a couple of days 2 years ago and really enjoyed it. Only issues was the slow speed of service in the cocktail bar :)

Hehehe whilst I do have extravagant tastes I actually won that trip through work and everything was paid for.

The most I have paid for a hotel room is around €795 per night but then again that was the honeymoon ;)

Also bear in mind that if you are looking at dates around the WC the prices will be inflated dramatically.

Wow, that sounds pricey even for there! Generally though, hotels around the V&A are pricier.

A lot of my friends have stayed at the Commodore and raved about it, so try there. Also the Protea Victoria Junction and the Southern Sun Waterfront might be a bit cheaper.

October shouldn't be that dear as peak rates don't start until Nov at the earliest usually.

I've stayed in the Commodore, and it's fine. We got upgraded to a suite, which was nice, and there are flunkies everywhere to do your bidding. There's a slightly "corpoarate", typical modern hotel feel about it. But it's very close to the waterfront.

I've also stayed in the Cape Heritage - http://www.capeheritage.co.za/ - and given another opportunity that's where I will return to. It's different, and more personal.

Both of them had working safes.

We had a tight budget and our hotel was in Bantry bay area ! Very safe, Very comfortable and they have taxis that can take you anywhere very cheap. Exercise some caution but we had no problems there and would gladly go back :) Enjoy :D

We stayed in some superb guesthouses in Constantia and Bantry Bay when we were there. There's no comparison between them and guesthouses here, and the areas felt very safe. Have a look here for more details.
