How do you do market research in an industry where no one wants to share any information?

I understand that certain gyms don't want to disclose how many members they have but surely if I was a potential member and I did not want to be in a gym that has a massive amount of members I should be at least told we have x amount of members roughly if I ask so at least I know it can be very busy at peak times.

Do you know how many members are in your gym?

are you trying to conduct market research? or join a gym?

Any gym that is any good will probably be busy during peak times. if the gym doesnt have a lot of members they wont have the funds to run a decent facility in the first place

I'm actually trying to research the market. Studying Business at the moment and I have decided to focus on the leisure industry for my class assignment.

My other comments were just my feelings on the subject.

The actual number of members in a club is of no real use to you - you need the number of 'live' members, which is difficult for a club to work out generally speaking.
I think that you will have trouble getting enough quality information from clubs and bigger companies (ben dunne, Total Fitness, Westwood & Jackie Skelly's) to base a project on.

Yeah its not an easy one, I've got some numbers but all speculation. If there's anyone working in a gym with this kind of info please feel free to PM me, I'll make no reference to the gym, message will be deleted as soon as its read and I won't make the information available to anyone. The gyms will be known as gym a and gym b etc.

    Any help would be great.

Why would he be only interested in 'live' members? All members are revenue generating.

I really doubt you'll get this. Its commercially sensitive information.

Live members would give you a good indication alright.

I'd expect regulars would know roughly how many members there are. A better question from a business point of view would be what margin the club makes per member or whatever.

On a side note will your study get published anywhere? I've seen many a gym, a small number of them weren't great, charged a lot, but were still packed! I always wondered how that could be.

Regulars would only be able to guess, just like anybody else. No reason why regulars would know to be honest. I doubt regulars go 7 days a week all day long. ;)

Is there a limit of memeberships to sq/ft of space anyone know?

I am not sure about that at all, but would that limit only be imposed at one point in time? I mean, if they had a limit of 300 in the building for fire hazard, they may still have 1000 member, you know?

The more inactive members you have, the more total members you can have. More Live members makes for less room.
    so both are important

There wouldn't be a limit over all per sq.m
But as you guessed there would be a limit as per the fire cert. I imagine that you wouldn't get near the fire cert limit, as it would allow a higher amount than you could fit in and still have be enough room to excercise

You could be honest with them and explain that it's for a business assignment, and see if they'll be more forthcoming that way

You could stand outside a gym for peak hours with a counter. Not very appealing weather-wise but it would answer your question.

No it will all be in house nothing will be made public and we are not allowed to reference any names of any companies we use. For obvious reasons.

I think I might change the industry I focus on. The info I am trying to get seems to be too sensitive.

I was honest with everyone I spoke with over the phone. I explained what I was looking for and why. One gym said they would call me back but didn't. One receptionist of a gym let it slip how many they had but then changed her mind and put me on to someone else who pretty much told me to go away.

I have thought about this, would help with one side of things, active members, but wouldn't help with actual membership numbers. Would mean selecting 5 or 6 gyms and counting how many members come and go during peak times for 5 days a week and work out an average per gym.
