A Ryanair Boeing 737 carrying more than 300 passengers had to divert to Berlin from Leipzig after a control tower worker did nor turn up.

    300 Passengers in a Boeing 737 800?

Well thats what Ryanair get for using one man operated ex military bases :D

Seems about right. 189 in economy class, 111 in baggage hold class.

Not withstanding the obvious errors in that report.

Interesting bit at the end , Ryanair say they can only land at airports they have contracts with ...

I assume if there is a true emergency that goes out of the window ......

That flight was operated by Eirjet on behalf of Ryanair.

This is standard procedures for most airlines. They can run into all sorts of logistical issues otherwise. For example, if the plane had to refuel at an airport it does not normally operate to, there can be issues with payments to the fuel company which lead to even further disruption.

Think that happened way back when during the 80's with a TWA hi-jacking. One of the stewardessess had to pay for fuel using her own card in Algiers

    correct

although in case of a simple diversion , you would go to your 1st commercial or technical alternate airport .

There was an Air Jamaica flight diverted to Prestwick a few years back and they had to ask the passengers if anyone had a credit card they could borrow!

I wonder how much it costs to fill up a 767!

    About $51,000 :D

According to this page the 767 holds 23,980 US gallons or 90,700 litres of fuel.
Jet 1 is around $2.119 a gallon making a full tank $50,813.62

Ahh, but the Air Jamaica was probably something a wee bit smaller than a 767.... like a DC 3 :D

Or someone had a huge credit limit
