Interior Design on a new house.

I'm currently in the construction stages of building my new home but want to try get a jump start on the interior design of it if at all possible.

Its Approx 3100sqft and is a storey and a half. The concept I have in mind is "A modern take on an old farmhouse"

What I like so far is:
Floor: Dark natural tiles on the whole Ground floor. I've decided on a slate tile throughout. The reason I want the same through out is that I hope to be able to tie rooms in together with common touches like wood (walnut and the flooring (slate). I really like natural finishes so high gloss is a no-no.
Doors: Walnut Shaker style doors throughout the house. I think these and the dark flooring with white or light cream walls would go well together. I was planning on going for dark handles rather than chrome or gold ones. A matt stainless steel look might also suit.
Kitchen: I quiet like a traditional American style when it comes to the kitchen. Its a slight twist on the standard Walnut kitchen with some basic painted wood panels. EXAMPLE EXAMPLE2 The only thing with this is that I think it might make the kitchen seem dark and uninviting, and thats the room I want to be the hub of the house.
Stairs: I am really set on this style and I plan to make it the centre piece of the house. EXAMPLE1 EXAMPLE2 EXAMPLE3 Again I really like the painted wood and walnut combination.

    Now to my questions.

Firstly what do you think of the concept I am going for, and how do you think my selections go towards that concept?
What would you add to it in terms of initial installations?
Do you know of any online references that might give me inspiration?
Is there anything you think I should avoid with trying to achieve this concept/style?
Also I hate traditional net curtains and would be looking for a sustainable alternative, what would you suggest?

All feedback is welcome and for reference my plans can be found by following the "The House That Boards Built" link in my sig.

    Hi Quazzie,

I am an interior designer and I like the concept that you are going for, but just be careful because if you use too much walnut it could be a bit overpowering especially if you have very dark floors.

I would be more than happy to discuss things further, if you want I can PM you my details.
