Well, not the 5 cent... I got no beef with the 5 cent, but does anyone else hate 1 and 2 cent coins and think we should get rid of em?

I put a proposal up on Your Country Your Call, the top voted ideas have a chance of getting implemented! If you agree could you spare a vote? :pac:

i save them up in an empty 2 litre coke bottle and cash them in when its full. last time i did i got €60 so seems silly to me to get rid of them

i hate it when the feckin toll booths won't take coppers, but will gladly dish them out when you don't have the right change. although, they're a grand way to delay everyone in tesco...

No, simply because people in this country would only use it as an excuse to round prices up, again.

Agreed they are fiddley but what do you do. Put the prices up and raise inflation or down and cause deflation....?

but agreed they are annoying and fiddley.

They got rid of them in australia but still have prices like $9.99
They just mark up or mark down

It's better not having a pocket full of shrapnel imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 872 ✭✭✭gerry87

The point about the rounding up/down. For one if the psychological benefit of pricing things at 9.99 is that huge, then it would be worthwhile to round down to 9.95.

Beside 9.99 to 10 is one tenth of a percent of inflation, less for more expensive stuff. Shops have even stopped prices ending in 99 cent by themselves because of the hassle.

Basically it wouldn't have any real influence on inflation.

Exactly that's how it could work, the same way that petrol is priced in 1/10 of a cent, but they just round up or down depending on the price.

No, but I do hate when people call them "copper coins" as (ironically) there's actually more copper in the 10c , 20c, 50c than in 1c 2c 5c. Approximately 25 to 30 times more in fact..

(btw I can still find ways to get rid of the small coins ... bus fares etc so no they're not a bother)

    Step 1.
Collect all the copper coins in the country and place them in a large strong bag.

    Step 2.
Tie them to the ankles of Cowen and Harney.

    Step 3.
Push both over board at deep sea, at the same time.

    Problem solved.
    - Actually, now that I come back and think about it, a lot of problems solved!

The only thing they're good for is charities.

I work in the shop down the road from me and there are a huge amount of coppers put into the charity boxes every day. Nearly everyone will leave their 1 cents in it and most people 2 cents.

At least they're going to a good cause in some cases.

Plus, they are so damn small.

You obviously weren't around when the ha'pennies were in circulation.

I miss the Pound coins though.

Yeah, they had a bit of weight to them compared to the euro coins. Felt like they were worth something.

I remember when I was young you'd get a pound from someone and you felt rich!

;) Found an old 5p piece circa 2000 recently, not comparison to the copper plated steel 5 cent coin. A lot smaller but definitley worth more! At least 5 p went further than 5 cent does today. :D

    Artic lorry?
It will be a cold day before you see that happening! :D

The system they seem to operate in places in the Netherlands appears to work well. No need to change any prices in the shop, once all your purchases are tallied, the final total gets rounded.

So for example €15.86 and €15.87 get rounded to €15.85.
    €15.88 and €15.89 get rounded to €15.90.

If all the money tied up in coin jars etc could get back in circulation, it would save the Central Bank a decent bit in having to mint new coins.

Whats the point in having this worthless rubbish putting holes in ones pockets and can one actually buy anything costing less than 5c ?

Euro coins in general are pretty awful.

I dump most of the 'brownies' in a jar at home alright, I like to think it will add up to something eventually...it'll have to be my pension scheme!!

I actually have an old twenty pound note in my wallet, so much nicer than these yoyos.

Government persuasion is a good thing, perhaps the Greens should be lobbied on this, Finland produced an initial set of coin for circulation but then withdrew the 1, 2 & 5 Cent coin from circulation for rounding purposes. From an enviromental perspective this is clear vision!

I personally don't keep the hideous copper palted metal coins at all. Cannot imagine how much that tallies to over the years. ;)

I wonder if everybody in the country handed over all their loose 1 and 2 cents how much would it add up to. We could afford to give Mary Harney a mecha-makeover.

I think she's "gonna get a free one" at the next election anyway given the x ray fiasco this week.

People who throw the small coins in charity boxes would probably still do it, only now the small coins would be worth 2.5 to 5 times as much.

If 80% of people stop putting money in the charity box the charity would still get the same amount of money.

Plus one 5 cent coins weighs less than any combination of 1/2c coins to make up 5cent, i'm not sure what volume of coins charities would be getting but if it's high enough that could make a big difference.

Hell no, how would you get off with drink driving if there was no coppers

I just don't let them build up in the first place. If I get something small in the shop, I will always use as much of the coins as possible to pay for it. Failing that, I will buy my first pint in the pub with them.

I got a pint in the local pub a few months ago and I paid for it with all the shrapnel I could find in my wallet. It probably added up to more weight than the pint itself :D.

maybe the EU should mint a 99c coin for all the €5.99 prices

or maybe they should ban x.99 prices

do we really need anything smaller than 10c ?

wear magnets on your shoes to pick up the coppers
