Ireland U20 coach Allen Clarke is pleased to select from a full panel and for the first time this series, has made changes to his starting XV.
Recent Connacht debutant Tiernan O'Halloran makes his first start of the season on the wing. There is also a new look to the front row as Jack O'Connell moves from tighthead to loosehead with Stewart Maguire moving up from the replacements for his first start.

There are three new faces on the bench with Leinster's Risteard Byrne and Munster duo Bryan Cagney and Gareth Quinn McDonogh coming into the 22 for the first time.

Speaking of his selection and of the task at hand, Clarke said "Whilst the decision to alternate the squad was given much consideration, the changes reflect the quality of the player group."

"Stewart Maguire has been impressive when he has been launched from the bench and Tiernan O'Halloran has returned to the fine form he was displaying prior to sustaining an injury in a warm up match in December.

"Gareth's inclusion in the replacements is reward for his performances in the AIB League with Shannon as is that of Risteard Byrne with UCD."

"Planning and preparation has gone well. There is an appetite within the squad to continually develop as individuals and as a team. The attention to detail and focus to improve reflect the respect we have for Wales and the squad ambition to build on our performances in the championship."

    IRELAND UNDER-20 Team & Replacements (v Wales U-20, RBS U-20 6 Nations Championship, Dubarry Park, Friday, March 12, kick-off 7.35pm):

    15 - Andrew Conway (Blackrock College/Leinster)
    14 - Darren Hudson (St. Mary's College/Leinster)
    13 - Brendan Macken (Blackrock/Leinster)
    12 - Nevin Spence (Ballynahinch/Ulster)
    11 - Tiernan O'Halloran (Galwegians/Connacht)
    10 - James McKinney (Queen's University/Ulster)
    9 - John Cooney (UCD /Leinster)
    1 - Jack O'Connell (Lansdowne/Leinster)
    2 - Niall Annett (Belfast Harlequins/Ulster)
    3 - Stewart Maguire (Old Belvedere/ Leinster)
    4 - David O'Callaghan (UCC/Munster)
    5 - Ben Marshall (UCD/Leinster)
    6 - Rhys Ruddock (UCD/Leinster) (Capt.)
    7 - Dominic Ryan (Lansdowne/Leinster)
    8 - Patrick Butler (Shannon/Munster)

    Replacements:
    16 - Risteard Byrne (UCD/Leinster)
    17 - Bryan Cagney (UCC/Munster)
    18 - Brian Hayes (Cork Constitution/Munster)
    19 - Robin O'Sullivan (Bective Rangers/Leinster)
    20 - Michael Heaney (Belfast Harlequins/Ulster)
    21 - Gareth Quinn McDonogh (Shannon/ Munster)
    22 - Eoin Griffin (Corinthians/Connacht)

Great to see O'Halloran get a start, will have my eye on him. Let's hope that Andrew Conway's Leinster exposure will boost his confidence.

Can't find a table but iirc if Ireland beat Wales, they will be in pole position to win the championship.

Interesting that Kingston has been dropped altogether, thought he played quite well when he came on in the last few games, thought for sure he was pushing for a start.

Good to see its on tele. There could be alot of tries in this game so hopefully TOH and the underrated Hudson will get their hands on alot of ball.

Poor decision making from Ireland, should have kicked more penalties instead of going to touch.

They need the points though, don't they?

The pack just seems too strong for Wales. Scrum is immense.

    Final score?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,418 ✭✭✭Jip

Not finished yet, possible Welsh try being looked at at the moment. Ha, the U20s finish off strongly just like their seniors.

edit. Try awarded, conversion missed, final score 24-17.

We fluffed so many chances for points whoever was making the decisions out there needs a clip on the ear.

I agree the kicker was doing very well even if he missed those kicks probably get a 22 drop out or an attacking lineout in the last third of the field.

Was watching a top 14 game and stade i think were on top by 20 or so points

kick on front of posts and took 3 points it demoralises the opposition and keeps the score ticking over
everytime they repel an attack is a boost for them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,415 ✭✭✭chupacabra

Also Macken is totally wasted with spence inside him, it's a real shame because if he gets the ball in space he can do serious damage to any opposition. Sadly spence isn't the kind of player to put you into that space.

Ryan can certainly tackle - if he keeps his progress up, he could be starting next year for Leinster

Long way to go from being a good under 20 player to displacing one of 4 full senior internaionals who have plenty left in terms of years
    and miles on the clock.
If Ruddock also progresses leinster will have massive depth in the backrow send a few west please

Jennings is coming to the end IMO - and if Ryan progresses he should be challenging next year, I like the way he tackles, but realise it will tougher again at senior level

Huh? Jennings has around 5 years minimum in him still. Hes only 28

Dom Ryan is a good prospect but he's not even close to Jennings yet. Maybe in a couple of years with some added conditioning and experience.

Let's not forget that Ryan does not have to contend just with Jennings, but with O'Brien as well who is some specimen of a man. I would have SOB ahead of Jennings if it was up to me.

Yeah, you are right,at the age of 28 he is done.David Wallace is 34 or something,Jennings will be the 7 at the wc so dont get too upset but then you clearly have a clue!

On todays match,an utter disgrace in the way they played.Wales deserved to win!

Its good to know that leinster have the best 3 7's in the country behind wallace, whom o'brien would have been ahead of.2 of whom are under 22
