Garmin 405 - using autolap function during workouts?

    I'm hoping this is an easy question for someone to answer, but I haven't been able to figure it out yet.

    Using my Garmin 405, I like to have the autolap function tell me each time I've run a mile and what my time was for that last mile. This works fine when I simply start the watch and go, but if I use a pre-programmed activity transferred from the Garmin Training Centre software, any workout I do will not incorporate the autolap function into it. How can I make these pre-programmed workouts use the autolap function? It's not a huge issue, but it would be nice to see my runs broken down into individual miles.

    You'll have to break your preprogrammed run into one mile laps, or repeats, unfortunately.
    If you create an advanced training workout, then each item in that workout becomes the new lap, instead of your standard lap functionality.

    I often use advanced workouts for pmp sessions, where I don't necessarily need to know individual miles (e.g. 3 mile warm-up, 10 miles @pmp, 2 mile warm-down).

    So you could alternatively create an advanced training plan that looks like:
    Repeat x 3:
    1 mile warm-up

    Repeat x 10:
    1 mile @pmp

    Repeat x 2:
    1 x mile warm down
    It just wont provide you with an average pace for the pmp section, instead giving you averages for each mile. It's a trade-off.

    Another alternative would be to import the workout history into Sportstracks afterwards, where you can segment the workout in any way you want, and look at individual sections by distance.

    Thanks guys - that makes sense. I'll have to look into the Pfitzinger and Douglas program.

    The Advanced workouts I've created so far are mainly tempo runs with gradually increasing heart rate, and interval workouts including warm-ups and cool-downs. Even my simpler runs, like an easy 8 miler, are done as Advanced workouts since it allows me to drag and drop everything into the Garmin Training Centre software and have it automatically sync with my watch (i.e. I don't have to remember how far each run is supposed to be since it just pops up on the watch each day). It's a shame the autolap automatically gets disabled with all of those runs.

    It's not the the auto-lap is disabled, but instead, laps are allocated to each activity in an advanced workout. This actually makes sense, as if you're doing intervals, you want the intervals to be represented by laps, rather than using auto-laps based on covering a pre-defined distance.

    What they really should have is a way to break laps into individual segments, based on distances (like sportstracks).
