Car tax expired on 28/2/10... exporting car on 31/3/10

    Hi,

I have a car in Dublin and the tax expired last month (still NCT'd and insured though). It has been effectively off the road since mid-Feb (apart from a couple of runs to keep battery ticking over).

The car is being driven by my brother to Belfast to get the ferry to the Isle of Man, where it will be tested, registered, taxed and insured.

If my brother gets pulled on the way to Belfast, and gets a ticket for no-tax... what happens after the car is registered in the IOM and the Irish reg becomes invalid? What are the penalties for no tax?

Technically a trailer to the ferry is the best option...could tax it for 3 months and then claim two back? Think you can do that if a car is written off etc so might be possible with a car for export

Not possible. 3 months is the minimum refund I think.

A lot of Garda cars now have ANPR systems, so you could get stopped on the way to the north, although theres more chance of getting stopped in the north. Did you get the Gardas to sign the form to say the car is off the road?

I thought the issue in the North was that they were impounding ROI drivers that had UK/NI Reg'd cars that didn't have Valid tax?

Put a change of ownership form in the windscreen and it will cover the brother for his trip!
If he's caught, pay the tax, otherwise forget about it!

Form doesn't actually say that. What it does say is the the Garda is witnessing the owners signature.

Im sure they are after RoI cars being used by UK/NI drivers too.I think the Uk police will happily impound any car that appears not to be legal and let you sort it out later if you disagree.. for a RoI car to be used in the North it has to be road legal "at home" and not driven by a NI resident.

No. My brother in law has been taking it out once a week to keep it ticking over.

Your question was about Road Tax, not about Insurance.

Get your brother to bring a copy of the Ferry ticket in the car with him. If he's stopped he can tell the garda it's going for export. Only an asshole garda would make any issue of that

I was stopped in a similar circumstance but in the UK bringing an untaxed car back to Ireland - showed the Ferry booking to the police man who had no issue at all.

Bah. Ferry last Wednesday was cancelled, so I flew over myself at the weekend and drove it up to Belfast for the ferry.

I was stopped at a checkpoint in Dublin - I immediately rolled down the window and told the Garda that the tax was out, and why.

She looked at me skeptically, I explained the situation... I think the two baby seats in the back elicited some sympathy so I was waved on.

Now lets hope the car passes the Manx car test on Tuesday!
