Working for company through an agency?

    Hi Folks,

I have vaguely heard of this before, but would appreciate any experiences/comments.

Doing an interview tomorrow, and if sucessfull would be employed by an agency and hired out to the company in question.

    Its a technical/engineering role.

I have a job at the moment which is permanent, but is far from home and family.
The new job would be very close to home, however I am wary of it.

Whats the thinking behind this type of 'sub-contracting'?

Easier for company to drop you at short notice?
I presume there would normally be absolutely no benefits with this type of set-up? (i.e. pension/vhi etc)

    Thanks,

    Dave

one benefit might be that you will be earning 500euro+/day instead of 100euro/day.
or if you are employeed by this agency are you getting a normal wage ?
In that case i would expect that they give you some sort of benefits

Yes, its a salary position as opposed to contract work.

No benefit to you at all really. It's exactly as you suspect.

Reason I am considering it, is because of the location.
Not looking for extra benefits or salary.

Do you have experience of working in a set-up similar to this?

I dont have experience as such - i am permantent with a consultancy company which means if they dont have somewhere to put me im still getting paid.
you would need to consider whether you are on a salary (guaranteed income) or does it depend on clients needs.

if its an agency that you are applying for - what happens if the job near you gets canned, you will either be put somewhere else or out of work.

I would stay permanent if i could for peace of mind.
can you contact a company directly near you and see if they are hiring

stay with the full time job the company that would be using the agency could cancel the contract at anytime
