Was talking to Jack Phipps today and the man v horse race is on again this year. Last year it was organised very late in the day and used as a trial really. This year they are hoping for a big turn out with a good pot for any relay team or individual that's interested. Date to be finalised this week.

I'd put my money on the horse!

I love these sort of challenges. Any idea what sort of terrain will be used for the course? I'd imagine it would have to be something to challenge the speed of the horse.

Not sure just yet but I will post some details
Seems the horse won last year but the runner was in his own words an "average joe-soap". Didn't bother him too much as he walked off with a large pot anyway.

    Of what? Oats, manure?

What's the point of these races? Horse will always win unless a course is built in such contrived manner as to make the human have a fair chance.

    Utterly pointless.

Might as well race a tortoise but stacked odds against the runner

Well my advice is don't do it so and i'll take your place. The runner has won before. The horse has to stop for a medical check up(the rules).

From what I have seen it's a great event and something different, or perhaps you would prefer another 10k phoenix park charity race....zzzzzzzzzz

Apart from the original notice last year there wasn't any follow up by way of results? The route looked interesting from what I can recall.

Not always I think there is one in the UK that the horse lost seem to remember it took a sub 2:30 marthon pace to win .. The horse look fast on tv but they cant kepe that pace going for long :)

I meant the horse will always win unless the course is designed in such a way as to favour the runner.

Each to their own though, would be a spectacle.

    what's the point?
What's the point of it all indeed. I love hearing that question - it let's me know I'm still on the right track with these pointless races.

There is no point, it's life and how you live it, some race to win, gain external validation, for fitness, some choose to race against a handicapped horse, some against their middle aged spread and others against their angst with the aforementioned life....

If you don't like it don't do it, I usually find myself asking that question whilst hopelessly lost in the middle of a orienteering event :)

As Johnny CLEC might say - "Avec Spirite"

That's not true, it depends on the distance.

Over 100 miles, a top ultra runner will beat any horse (that's how 100 miles ultra marathons started in the states, btw)

In the battle of man versus horse over 100m who would win?

According to this rather humorous discussion, the consensus is that the horse would win (except on a basketball court where it would struggle to get traction). Ben Johnson lost to two horses, but narrowly beat a stock car.

Darn thing is on the day after the Circuit of Avonbeg:( (now who'd win that race, horse or rider?). Pity, because it looks really interesting.

More info here. Who'd be crazy enough to do the two?
