Decision Time - To Drool or Not to Drool

We've had loads of debate on the issue of having an "appreciation" type thread for the forum. The time has now come for us to decide what we are going to do.

    You have two options:

A simple no to having a thread in this forum, which allows for people to post pics of what get their juices flowing, a human beauty appreciation thread if you will.

A yes to the thread, within the guidelines posted below. With these guidelines, the forum charter and overall boards.ie policies on such things, moderation decisions will be made. The thread will be as described above, to allow for posters to post pics of what get their juices flowing, a human beauty appreciation thread if you will.

The guidelines for the thread are as follows

    1. Nothing you wouldn't show your mother/boss/been seen looking at on the library computer
    2. If you think a pic is a little OTT or going to push the boundaries, then it probably is
    3. While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and we're open to all sorts of tastes here in tGC, don't take the mick. We all know the difference between a genuine like for something that isn't the Hollywood vision of loveliness and someone trolling.
    4. None of this "I'd roide her" and other such cheap comments. In fact, keep the chat levels down, no pic no post, and just appreciate the beauty.
    5. If you approve of something someone else has posted, use the Thanks button
    6. Don't argue a Mods decision in the thread. Its against the charter and the general rules of the site. Take it to a PM conversation first if you have an issue.
    7. Don't ruin this thread for the majority of people who will respect it for what it is. A little bit of lightheartedness in amongst the serious conversations

The poll will remain open for 3 days from now. That should be more than enough time for people to get the vote in.

We've had plenty of discussion already. We can tweak individual elements of this as we go along. Now is the time for deciding.

    Cheers people

    MM

Oh on a related point to the poll.

I've kept the results hidden until the poll closes. That was a deliberate choice so that people could vote on what they really think, and not on what the results so far had shown them etc. I find counting chickens before hatching generally a bad idea :)

I don't know if it was discussed on the debate thread (apologies if so) but I fear a lot of people may vote who don't necessarily use the forum just to score or make some kind of political point.

Yeah I did point that out. I wasn't mad about a poll in general for that reason. A public poll would sort that out but it's not well suited to something like this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,373 ✭✭✭Dr Galen

its a valid point alright lads, but our hands are a bit tied on this one. We need the transparancy of a poll but we also need to keep things somewhat secret so that those posters who post regularly in and care about tGC, but didn't post in the debate thread can have their voice heard.

Sure we can see how it pans out in 3 days

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,914 ✭✭✭✭tbh

I don't think we should have the thread. I just don't think it's that kind of forum.
I have a vast collection of bookmarks to prove I'm no prude - or as I saw a great man post today - "I'm never happier than when tassles are flying" (my new favourite phrase) - but for the type of forum I'd hope this one is, I think it's inappropriate.

I also think it serves to 'dumb down' the forum. I don't mean that in a disparaging way - but it's like - there's pub banter, and there's dinner party conversation. I love - LOVE - pub banter, but I also like to stretch myself every now and again with a dpc. There are plenty of "pub" forums, but few non-specific dpc forums, and that's what I think we have in this one.

I voted no simply because its about as much use as a pair of shorts are in a blizzard.

    It is completely pointless.

Someone pointed out that there are two routes into tGC. One is from the Soc menu. The other route is from Science/Mens Health menu. The drool thread does not reflect well on the forum for anyone using that door.

If yes does win then no name no pic should also include the the "rules". So basically, no name/no pic/no comment.

I don't think it reflects well, period. We already have a BGRH forum for that kind of thing.

I thought this forum was for Gentlemen's Interests among other things. Pretty ladies/(men if that is the case) are certainly among Gentlemen's interests. How ever Gentlemen being Gentlemen should know the tasteful pictures that can be posted and if they do not the guidelines are there.

Basically I believe in "Don't like the thread? Don't click on it"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,810 ✭✭✭Mackman

I dont have a problem with it, im a guy, lady's in lingerie make me drool :)
im of the same opinion as Kirnsy, "Dont like the thread, dont click on it".
In saying that, i do agree with the "no name, no pic" rule suggested by Keano. And keep the pics to one thread only, postigs provocate pics in other threads will incur punishment maybe? Just a suggestion.

Just because people do not post does not mean that someone doesn't use the thread/forum. Should all decision making be made only by people who post here?

I already decided that I won't be voting in the poll.
I consider myself a guest here and this is a matter for the men of the forum to riddle out.

Has to be a yes for me.

There are threads entitled 'Prostitution', 'Mistresses' and 'Women and underage boys' in this forum and no complaints against them not fitting in with this ethos of TGC forum which has been brought up.

But a thread entitled 'who makes you drool' with pictures of attractive women somehow doesn't fit in?
Surely if the merits of visiting or not visiting a prositute or having a mistress can be discussed and are of interest, then in my opinion a pictures thread is tame in comparison.

It is a forum for posts that will be of interest to men, this particular topic clearly is of interest.

I take your point, but I would also argue that 'Who makes you drool' is equally valid as a discussion given that it is a thread about different men's perspective on what or who they find attractive and others can comment on whether they agree or put forward their own preference.

It seems to be the fact that this 'discussion' is accompanied by pictures that seems to annoy people. Perhaps if the Prostitution discussion had a post saying 'Would you guys pay for this girl?' and then had a picture of the prostitute in question, that would be less acceptable?

Just seems to me that there is a very fine line between what is viewed as ok and what is not.

Why are we having a 2nd discussion on this? Can we not just vote in silence?

Also, if there's an obvious winner one way or the other at this stage can you just go ahead and reveal it? The curiosity is killing me. :D

seriously people. if ye dont like the thread dont view it...........................................................................................

i voted yes because i geniunely think it is a thread that we men talk about all the time with our mates. we should not be prudish about such topics.

as far as the thread not being what this forum is about.................. what is this forum about??? i thought it was a place guys could chat about guy problems and guy issues. and this topic is a guy issue. sure its not serious but we cant be 100% serious all the time.

here is an idea. use the title "who makes you drool(warning that some content may offend)" that way if you are offended easily with silly things then dont go into the topic. in fact why would you go into a topic you have no interest in. censoring what other people like is kinda vindictive

Each forum has a tone and character. If I was to suggest to you that both serious political discussions and threads about farting had a place in after hours, you wouldn't agree. Similarly, though not to the same extremes, if a "droll over hot girls" thread were allowed the tone of the forum would be shifted (not necessarily lowered as that has negative connotations) in one direction which would preclude discussions on the other end of the spectrum. Saying "don't click if you don't like it" is all well and good, but when looking for a place to start a thread, one should look at the existing threads and determine if the topic is in keeping with the establish subject matter.

Obviously not, people have a desire to sway voters one way or the other. Since this is a new thread it makes sense of arguements to be rehashed, even if it's for the third time in a row.

When this poll is done could we have another? Something like this:

Should any references of comparison of the tLL to that of the tGC be tolerated in tGC forum?

    Yes?
    No?

Fair point. What about renaming the thread then? Beautiful Women etc as opposed to 'drool'. I still think there should be a place for tasteful pictures that gentlemen like in this forum.

Finally if we want to avoid comparing TLL to TGC then definitely change the name of the thread because it is the identical thread to the one in TLL.

I voted yes, because as long as it is kept within the confines of the rules as posted by MM, then it will keep the thread 'classy', and will have it still fitting within the "Gentlemens" club.

the old thread is gone and will be staying gone.

If the vote goes down on the yes side of things there will be a new thread, and it will have a more Gentlemanly title. If anyone wants to PM suggestions to me that would be great. Lets not have 14 pages of suggestions though :) Just bear in mind that as has been pointed out, it may not always be a woman getting posted people. I'm sure we have Gents in this forum of all sexual persuasions and some inbetween. If they want to post a pic of someone that tickles their fancy then they would be totally entitled to do that. So maybe that into any suggestions you might be PM'ing me with

Yes. If not, we're bordering on censorship.

don't be ridiculous, with respect. It's not censorship, it's adherence to a standard, to a tone. Just like it's not censorship to say you can't discuss soccer in AH, or Maddy McCann in Soccer. Nobody is trying to supress this information, merely suggest that there are better places for it.

Its censorship considering there doesn't seem to be much leeway or discussion on what that set tone\standard is.

The tone set so far by posters on the thread isn't exactly hardcore super sex, why not just let it go on that way.

That's my stance too. There are no ungentlemanly things about the current thread that wouldn't be fixed by adherence to MM's suggested guidelines. I think it would be a pity to take ourselves so seriously as not to allow some underpants.

I'm guessing the pictures in the slydice forum are a bit more provovative than the ones posted in the drool thread. I never even knew it existed until I saw it mentioned in this Forum & am not that fussed about it.

I know comparisons with The Ladies Lounge are not really liked here but the one difference is that TLL seems to be more of an all round forum where TGC is more of a health forum rather than a gentlemans club with BGRH & slydice for other aspects of male interests.

For me TGC be better as an all round forum that encompasses more of a total view on mens interests as it's name suggests rather than specific aspects.

its not that comparisions with the Ladies Lounge aren't like, per se, its that its a comparison that shouldn't be made imho. We have a different forum, a different group of posters and a different community. Just a thought, but if more of the blokes spent more time in the Gentlemens Club, than hanging around in the Ladies Lounge, then we might have a bit more going on here..........

As for your point on the type of threads we have here. Well there is no stipulation that things have to be health based, its just that those threads have been started recently and have got legs. We're not specifically only about that aspect of things. If you look around, there are threads about all sorts of things here. There is nothing to stop any user starting a thread on a male issue, experience etc here at all. :) Go for it mudokon

Well at the very least lets try not to be as hypocritical about it as the laddies of the ladies lounge. Some extremely lured images are posted up over there regularly. Air brushed and altered in a dozen ways, the type of images which spark angru accusations of male dominance and disrespect when they are of woman.

None I post or am a member of. Its besides the point anyway. There's plenty of forums with crossover. Tobe honest I'm unlikely to view the thread very often if ever. Just think it sets a prudish precedent and means all threads have to be heavily moderated.

I just don't see why it bothers you that it's there.

I don't really know how many men frequent the Ladies Lounge as I never bother going in there really but the topics in here give this forum an intense feel so maybe it is intimidating to some people & having threads of a more light hearted nature may help to increase traffic & then people may be comfortable enough to post on the more serious aspects of the forum.

I agree with those points but they dont cause issues that can't be overcome with sensible moderation e.g Mystik Monkey's drool thread guidelines.

For the record I'm not voting in the drool poll as I'm not that bothered whether it exists or not.

I don't see why there shouldn't be a thread of this nature here, in my mind it would be a quasi self-censorship effort, a setting of false standards in order to peddle a more intellectual, enlightened (and somewhat false) version of men's thinking. We all succumb to the 'sinister urge' in some respect sp why deny it? Imo a light-hearted and banterish thread like this would fulfill this essential side of a man's nature.

That said I really wouldn't be ar$ed contributing to it.
