    Hey,

I'm getting my first car on thursday, which is day after tomorrow, and so was wondering what are the things I need to make sure I get done before and after I get the car?

    Cheers.

    P.S.
I also wanna make sure the car I'm buying has a clear history (not stolen or anything) and no finance or anything like that. What would be the best place for me to find this out?

history check - google is your friend. Mywheels.ie or something similar

Tax it, Insure it, put petrol in it...drive sensibly and not like a pr1ck and you'll be away:D

Ensure you have clear title, and make sure your tax and insurance are in order.

I assume at this late stage you've done every mechanical, and historical check possible on the car.

    Happy motoring!

mywheels says car is clear but it gives a very small report. A friend of mine was saying I could ring up the garda to ask if the car is clear... I was wondering how you would go about doing this...

I'm gonna get a full check done on thursday and if the garage guys say its not too bad, i'm gonna buy it there.

Also how do you sort out the insurance for the car?
A problem with me is that currently I'm on the provisional but I've got my driving test this saturday (which I've gotta pass no matter what!), so what should I do with the insurance?
Should I pay twice for the provisional for 2 days and then get a refund after I pass my test or should I just wait until saturday after I've done my test before I get the insurance??...

Wait until you do your test if you pass you'll have more insurance companys quoting for you if you have a full licence

go to an insurance broker they will check the market for the best deal when you get your licence

I called a couple, they didn't really seem much helpful.
Anyone know any good insurance brokers I could contact??

Also If I don't have insurance, then how am I supposed to get the car from the seller's place to mine??...

Back of a truck, also keep in mind that if something was to happen to the car it wouldn't be covered. If I was you I'd insure the car on your provisional then seek a refund. If this is your first time being insured then chances are there won't be too much of a difference anyway

You may have to wait until you do your test and insure your car before you collect it
My broker is Eagney Insurance Services I find them ok

This is what I'm probably gonna end up doing.
Can barely afford the car + insurance so can't really afford a truck.
I think the provisional quote was almost twice as much as the full license quote. So there is a significance difference. But I'll get the provisional insurance anyway as I'ld like to practice a bit for my test on the car before I get to do the test...

Gotta call up more insurance companies and brokers tomorrow to find that magic cheap deal!

Are you serious?? When I was getting quotes for my OH the difference was negligible because it was all first time insurance anyway

Quinn quoted me 1300eur for full license, though yesterday when I called them, they tried to screw me over quoting me 1600eur.
And they quoted something like 2.5k for provisional.

Everyone else quoted me around 1800-2000eur for full license and about 2500-3000eur for provisional...

Would it not make sense to get your full license before buying the car?

Well, as I said, I'ld kinda like to practice on the car a little before I get to do the test. I was supposed to get the car last week so I could have all of this week to practice but things got a little delayed and I'm only gonna be having two days to practice before I my test. Still any practice should be good though...

And another thing I was wondering was I'm not gonna get the insurance until I get the car checked in the garage and the mechanic says its good to buy.
So then I could buy the car, ring up the insurance and get it.

Now I still wouldn't have any insurance disc or conformation paper or anything. So if I get stopped or something, how can I tell I've got insurance on it?

I'm in exactly the same position as you (a week later for the test). Found a good deal and bought on Monday. I got the car delivered to my house by the seller (which is in a safe enough, quiet area). My best quotes (26, m, first time) are 1300 provisional, under 1000 full, so I'm waiting.

Although you should probably make sure it is secured if you're leaving it out uninsured. Or you could camp on the porch with a shotgun.

Do the test in the car you learned to drive in. You won't know the new car well and could make some mistakes. Better to use a car your used to.

I am taking the test in my instructor's car.
I'ld just practice stuff like taking corners while in the right position, going about roundabouts and the simple stuff like that which is where I end up making most mistakes cuz I keep forgetting to do simple things like indicate or looking over shoulder before moving off and stuff like that...

No offence, but if you forget to indicate, or look for other vehicles/pedestrians around you, maybe you should take one or two more lessons before you do your test.....

I am taking a 2hr lessons on friday, which is gonna be like a pretest...
Hopefully i should be able to sharpen my skills then. And like I know how to drive and such. I'ld consider myself a pretty safe driver. Its just for the test you've gotta get everything exactly right all the time which is what I need to practice...

It's not just for the test, forgetting to look over your shoulder can easily result in a dead biker or cyclist.
