Complicated satellitle recording question

    Hi guys,

Firslty I'm not sure if this is the right place but please bear with me.

My landlord is paying for my Sky subscription (basic package with the small sat). This was an added bonus that was in addition to a good rental rate so I of course didn't complain!

However, I now want to be able to record onto a hard drive and play the recordiongs back on my tv (its a decent tv 42" phillips lcd with 4 hdmi inputs). I have an acer nettop computer on order to connect to my tv also as I wanted to have a mini htpc setup if possible.

In an ideal world I'd like to be able to access some free to air HD channels while I'm at it.

What tv tuner would you recommend for recording and inputting into the nettop and then onto the tv? I'm living in Dublin in case that matters.

Any observations or tips greatly appreciated.

I use this card (http://www.technisat.com/indexd606.html?nav=PC_products,en,76-15023) and I have no problems with it. You will also need some sort of software, this card comes with a knockdown version of DVBViewer which is fine for watching free to air channels and recording them.

To watch Sky Subscriptions channels on your PC you will need to have a full version of this DVBViewer or ProgDVB (there are many others too) and use a plugin addon then do something that I don't think we can discuss on Boards. It's not illegal if you are a valid Sky subscriber but it does involve reading the Sky card in a receiver other than the one you're provided with so it's boarderline on here, I'm afraid.

Thanks for the info and the comments on the sky card not something i was aware of! Unfortunately I don't think a tv tuner card will fit in the nettop :(

I would have though I'd need a standalone tv tuner. Something like this but I don't know if this would work in Ireland. Any views?

I'm not with you, I think!
You want a set top box that you could plug the satellite cable into and receive FTA channels and also record onto? Is that correct? You then want to be able to take the files off this box and transfer it to the nettop PC for playback on the TV?
Do you want the view/record Sky too?

The box you posted is a DVB-T box which is only good for terrestial signals, won't work with satellite.

Check out the cool products on this page:
    http://www.elgato.com/elgato/int/mainmenu/products.en.html

    However note:

    1) They work with DTT, not Sky

    2) The sat one will only work with Freesat, not Sky

    3) The minimum spec is a little higher then what an atom nettop can offer, so you will need to research it further.

This guy, plus an IR blaster might be able to record sky via a S-video, but it would be a pretty unstable set up:

Yes, a very cool product, but doesn't work in Ireland, however this one looks like it might do for DTT:

    Thanks azzeretti for taking the time to respond. I'm probably not even at the level of being able to articulate what I want so I'll summarise it simply as follows;

Bascially I have basic sky subscription. I have a nettop and an external harddrive. I have a decent tv. I don't have the option of getting a sky+ box as the account isn't in my name and I'm not paying for it (legally :p ).

I want to be able to record, pause and watch sky and/or free to air and I'm looking for suggestions as to how I can do that.

That's good to know!! I saw the DVB-T bit and it gave me pause and hence my OP.

Very interesting. My nettop is the following model and so far seems pretty robust. It might be able to handle the above products....

Do a google search for EyeTV Atom or EyeTV Nettop and you will see that there are people using it. It seems SD works fine, but HD not so well. So it should probably work for you, but no guarantees.
