    Ali Cook.
    Decent long form batsman.

Went for 111 from 5 overs yesterday.

What the hell were you thinking Ali?

Not a first class fixture anymore, as they made a substitute.

So they just scuppered the first class status of the match?

Why would they want to do that?
(Genuine curiosity, Im still a bit washy on the whole status malarky.)

    +1

Bit of a mystery to me all right. What constitutes 1st class or otherwise? Why on earth are 'A' matches considered first class anyway? Especially against 'select 11s'.

Carberry and Cooks bowling was farcical but at least England were Buffet bowling deliberately this time for a change!

First-class is supposed to indicate that the cricket is of a certain standard, and played according to the full Laws of cricket - thus the county/state competitions in test-playing countries, along with test matches and the Intercontinental Cup, are considered first-class.

Bringing in a replacement (not a substitute, a technical point) would invalidate the Laws of cricket and therefore the statisticians would remove the match's first-class status.

Quiz: what are the 4 things a substitute cannot do when on the field?

Enormous prizes on offer for the correct answer*.

    * probably a complete lie....

I know they can do a nice job of winding up Ricky Ponting,

    Complete guess

Bat, Bowl, keep wicket and maybe bring on the drinks. (Think I might have 2 out of 4)

I thought they could keep wicket with the opposing captain's permission?

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

I don't think a substitute can act as a runner for an injured batsman, so that's obviously not the answer

    Cant captain the team?

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

And my final guess - I presume a substitute cannot "captain" the team

EDIT Goddammit dooferoaks! - I hope we're both right

Now you're confusing the hell out of me:confused:

What happened to your first choice (which was correct)?

I guess I should just get back to work and check back later:)

Indecisiveness!!! As you can see above, I have put it back in again!! I heard the prize was a speed boat or fitted kitchen and got over excited.

OK TrueDub, the combined answer of dooferoaks and Beasty is

    Bat
    Bowl
    Act as wicket keeper
    Act as captain

If we are correct, we have agreed to share the prize - dooferoaks will take the kitchen, and I will take a week in your Spanish villa (which I understand is the minimum collateral you must put up when you become a mod)

Is it possible that they subbed Cook to preserve his bowling record?

The cynic in me would say that as captain, it's an underhand way to keep your first class averages intact

However the realist in me recognises that the substitution was made by the opposing team, and was probably made before Cook did his bowling:)

    Oh, ok.
    So why did Cook retire?
    Embarrassment?

Not sure of the precise circumstances, but he had some time at the crease (and was also involved in the one day matches), so was presumably simply letting someone else (in this case Tredwell, who had failed to score in the firts innings) get some practice ahead of the test match (which is not unusual when there are limited warm-up opportunities)

    Substitute

Looks like we were right, dooferoaks;)

    Retired out

Just reading on cricinfo that Pietersen has scored 69 in seven innings against Bangladesh so far this series

So when do you reckon we get our prize?

He's gone very quiet. I thought that Mods were supposed to be omnipresent. I suspect he's a bit taken aback at the fact I know about his Spanish villa. Anyway, I'm going to pop round and pick up the keys tomorrow.

Sorry, was at an umpiring meeting. Congrats, you guys were correct on all four - the one that most people don't get is the "acting as captain" one.

I might start a weekly laws, practices and jargon quiz if people would enjoy it.

As for the villa, it's not actually in Spain, it's in a (normally) quiet street in downtown Fallujah. I'm told it's still in reasonable shape, so which weeks do you want it? :D:D

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

Sorry, my mistake - dooferoaks wanted the villa, it was the kitchen for me

I think regular "tests" of our cricketing knowledge is a great idea

I may even be able to dig out some suitably obscure (and hopefully not too easily googleable) questions myself

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,325 ✭✭✭✭Dozen Wicked Words

I would welcome a few old questions, avoiding any urge to google the answer, and just wondered could I swap my villa stay for gift vouchers?
