There's some punter in the Leinster Academy who is 6"5 and 135kg - Stewart Maguire. Says he's played U16 and U18 for Wales, but U20 for Ireland. Anyone know what his story is? Is he actually any good, or a decent prospect? Lord knows lads of that size aren't exactly a dime a dozen, and to think he's only 20 :eek:

he's been coming off the bench for the U20's this season, reckon we should move him in with Roly Meates for a year or two to turn him into a top class prop.

Think his father is Irish and he was raised in Wales, i think...

From what I can gather it turns out he was absolutely huge, but his massive weight advantage led to him not learning any proper technique and once he faced other pro props it turned out he was a bit useless.

Given that he has played from U16 internationals this is shocking that they let him play this long without making sure he had learnt proper technique.

Also is he not a bit too big to be a prop?

At under age level you can get by in the front row by being bigger and stronger than the opposition, for example Ah You in Connacht played U20 for NZ

I saw him in the cinema in Dun Laoghaire with a few of the leinster lads once (over a year ago now). The biggest human being ive seen up close before. Don't know how he fit in the seat.

Oh I'm well aware it is the case but coaches should be making sure that the front row are always being properly trained especially at youth international standard. Good Props are hard to come by, especially in this country, so letting someone come through and get lots of valuable game time at the development level only to find out when he goes to Pro level that he can't actually scrummage isn't helpful to anyone.

It's like last years thread 'what do we do about the prop problem' and to me this is a screaming example of where the system is letting us down big time

A visual representation of how we should develop props...(ad infinitum)
