Hi, I have recently been looking at buying a Honda HRV 1.6 2001-04 and just wondering if anyone on here has any opinions on the car. how are they on fuel? is 1.6l too small an engine for the car? I am more interested in the extra space and these seem to be fairly cheap and a relatively small engine i dont want a big engine car but require the extra bit of space. Its either one of these or an estate car unless anyone has any ideas. I havent been able to come across a decent estate car around the same year for the same type of money <= €5000 they all have quite large engines. I dont want to go any higher than 1.6l i find it hard to justify paying tax on my 1.4 astra as it is with the little driving i do of which i do on the worst roads in the country. dont want to go off topic so if anyone has any advice i would appreciate it.
    Thanks
    Dave

Seems to be a decent car; http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/honda/hr-v-1999.aspx?

Only thing that possibly spoils an otherwise ideal car is the slightly disappointing fuel economy. 32mpg is quite poor for a 1.6. But the Hrv is a fairly large car?

A 1.9 diesel can return up to 50mpg. And diesel is cheaper.

they're quite heavy on fuel for such a small car. the boot is tiny too.
    Nice car to drive.

The HRV wouldn't rival any estate for space, it's more like a jacked up hatchback. Unless you particularly need the extra clearance over a normal hatchback? I test drove a few back along, all the irish ones were fine even with 100k on them. Don't get an auto, they are a CVT box and are the main thing to give trouble in them apparently. (usually the autos are jap imports, and may have been languishing around on docks and different yards like the jap one I tried, soggy brakes, fair bit of corrosion on different bits and pieces)

A focus hatchback or estate would probably give you as much room, with better fuel economy. Corolla 1.3 estate (don't know what year they stopped doing them) is probably the ultimate petrol miser estate, if it's just for space rather than heavy loads, but it does look like a space-hearse-from-the-future

Mrs drives an early one, 2 door, 99 reg. Fuel economy is poor TBH, about 30-33mpg depending on usual suspects. Space wise - reckon you'd get more in a regular hatchback.

It's saving grace is that it's been nigh-on unbreakable. In almost ten years of ownership, all that has needed attantion was a passengers electric window that used to drop a few inches o/night. Regular service and goes forever. She puts up about 400 miles + p/week and on back roads. Never misses a beat. We love the thing.

One thing - I'm not the smallest fella, and I find the front seats unforgiving on any longer drives I'm in it for. Watch out for that if it's relevant to you.
