Petrol Fiesta or Diesel Clio?

We have a Clio diesel on order and now the old man wants in on the action, however he likes the Fiesta. I don't rate the Ford diesels as highly as the Renaults, and the 1.25 petrol is be all accounts a lovely motor. So he is torn between the petrol Fiesta or the diesel Clio.

Which would you rate as the better car, 1.5 DCi Clio or 1.25 Titanium Fiesta?

Tricky one, both cars are excellent for different reasons.

The Clios diesel engine is a corker, tiny tax, good performance and unreal on fuel. These things can better 70 mpg.

The Fiesta will feel the strain fully loaded with 1.25 petrol engine but its a better car to drive and a fresher product.

    Right so.....That answers that! :D

Drove a new model Fiesta 1.25 Titanium recently, very impressive car and engine. But it wasn't cheap and Ford still only gives a 2 year warranty. Depending on the sort of driver your father is he could well prefer the petrol Fiesta. No small diesel can match the smoothness and throttle response of that 1.25 petrol. OTOH many people wouldn't even notice things like that and would say that they can't tell the differece between driving a petrol and a diesel.

You also have to consider all the added complication of a modern diesel too, Dual Mass Flywheels, injectors, DPFs which clog up when a car does a lot of short distance/undemanding low speed driving, a Fiesta has a very simple petrol engine and will offer superior reliability(so would a petrol Clio). Diesels are not suitable for sustained short distance/low speed driving, something I would presume a small car would spend most of its time doing.

It also looks much newer and fresher, it really is a great little car. Renault ruined the look of the Clio when they changed it recently.

The only downside is that no Fiesta has curtain airbags, I presume a Clio would, OTOH they are not an expensive extra and I would have the Feshty every time.

True, but if he gets the 5 year warranty with the Clio, worries over DMFs and injectors etc. will be significantly reduced. Also, the diesel Clio does not have a FAP (aka DPF)
