Do I need planning for putting a roof on a balcony on the duplex? We're in a three bed duplex above an apartment and want to cover up the balcony with a roof with velux windows in it. Do we need planning? Area = 150 sq ft.

I would rekon so,as you are physically altering the exterior structure and appearance of the building. And by adding a roof and velux windows this would mean planning permission.

    maybe I am wrong though.

You need planning - almost 100% sure. Looked at something like this for somebody before and local authority confirmed planning would be required (and more than likely refused - as it would set and undesireable precedent).

Chances are your balcony is owned my the managment company to which you are a part owner along with everone one else in the apartment complex....i don't think you would be allowed build anything on it...

Balcony to a duplex would be private open space - but that's also part of the planning problem. Covering it would eliminate the private open space for the duplex.
