Up to July 2003, it was possible to do with the landcrusier amazon, there are a good few out there but they are sought after. Rules changed regarding load space so it is no no longer possible to convert a jeep, unless it is huge inside

It was a disgrace the way they converted them as well, cutting the floor and welding a box in:rolleyes: always wondered what the story would be with these in the event of a rear end shunt as its a modification to the vehicle structure and couldnt imagine Toyota standing over them.

Just for kicks, what are the current rules?

Current rules dictate that the load bay must be a minimum 45% of the length of the wheelbase for "crewcabs", with a solid bulkhead fitted.

To get the €50 VRT instead of the 13.5%, the kerb weight must be over 3,449kg (Nissan got around this by uprating springs, but customs go by the weight on the chassis plate).

I think that it still works for an Amazon; my '96 Hilux Surf was only 2cm short for this, and the Amazon is, as far as I can remember, the same chassis with a bigger body.

Right, interesting, I thought it was calculated on cubic capacity, thats why a box was welded into the amazon's so the spare wheel would be inside the load space, there by making the load space bigger, and just about over the legal cut off point.

Obviously its different for the typical open crew cab, as it has a huge cubic capicity..... only capped by how long your ladder is :D

I wonder is there a volumetric limit and a linear limit for making crew cab commercials,

Take my 98 amazon commercial for instance

    wheel base is 2850mm

    http://www.toyotagb-press.co.uk/protected/vehicles/archived/press_packs/amazon0607/tech_spec.pdf

45% of which is 1282.5 mm

so if my rear load space was 1.3 meters long I could fit a bulk head, rear seats and re register it as a crew cab......

by the way where you get that info, would make interesting reading..;)

Isuzu have done this with the DMax. It is plated by Harris in Dublin at 3500kg DGVW by adding an extra spring leaf and uprated Koni shocks and so gets the 50 squid VRT.

Foxman; I brought in a Surf in December 2008, and learned all about the regs. There is no set cubic capacity; it goes on wheelbase proportion and kerb weight.

With your amazon, you should be able to do it and reclassify the tax without having to steel plate the windows at the very back, as full passenger VRT is already paid.

Drop into you local customs office with it first, but make sure you're talking to someone who knows what they're on about.
