I am studying Bachelor of Business Studies(marketing) at lyit and wish to become a lecturer.

I have applied for smurfit msc in marketing practice...however i am unsure whether this course is suitable for the progression for lecturing or should i just complete the course in lyit and later complete a phd somewhere..

or is there any other masters in marketing that would be more suitable

any info would be appreciated in the lecturing career..

    1) With so many people with doctorates unable to get a job lecturing at present, the very least you'll need is a PhD. Without being too negative a Masters is nothing like it was in 1975 or 1985.

    2) If you do a business PhD in Ireland, Smurfit would be best. One of the US colleges would probably be the place to go to internationally.

    3) Ask your lecturer about the job prospects for lecturing. I'd say they're as bad as any other discipline. Are you willing to do the "post-doc merrygoround" for up to 10 years after you've completed your PhD (when, if you're lucky, you may get permanency and then tenure track)?

    4) Tell your lecturer what you'd like to do, he'll recommend a course. Make sure you ask him where the best funding and supervisors are. You need a supervisor who networks and has contacts in other universities.

I did an Msc in marketing in University of Ulster (jordanstown) last year. The course, although quite difficult and tiring at times was run quite well. It is much cheaper than smurfit (although smurfit will give you more opportunities of employment)

The lectures are broken up into blocks, so for example you would do marketing principles from 9-5 tues/wed/thurs one week and then that module would be finished, you would then have the next week off and the following week you might do e-marketing, again from 9-5 tues/wed/thurs.

You also have to do assignments of course but there are only two exams, one in january and one in May. The dissertation has to be submitted in september but you will have a great chunk of the messy stuff out of the way by about march / april as you have a dissertation development module which is basically a module showing you how to do the diss, where to get info, how to write up the chapters etc....the assignment for this is a highlighted / cut down / analysis of the first three chapters of the diss.

I liked it because I knew what days I was on campus (only 3 days x 4 modules per semester) It is better than being in for 2 hours on a tues, three on a wed, one on a thurs etc etc for an entire year.
