Pumas to play in 2012 Tri-Nations

Didn't see this posted anywhere else....
Argentina will play in a revamped Tri Nations from 2012, with Sunday Star-Times sources confirming the International Rugby Board is poised to fund the Pumas' entry into the tournament.

Last year, the game's ruling body urged the southern hemisphere rugby alliance to welcome Argentina into its fold. Sanzar returned serve and told the IRB to put its money where its mouth was. And it has.

Later this month an IRB executive meeting is expected to set aside about $US2 million to underwrite the Pumas campaign.

IRB chief executive Mike Miller would not comment on the development on his latest visit to New Zealand this week. However, he confirmed an announcement was imminent, and it would herald an historic day for Argentinean rugby.

"Expect to hear something about that later in March," he said.

The Pumas should inject a bit of colour and spice into the competition and possibly even a format change.

There has been deep dissatisfaction in some quarters over the how home and away matches alternate. At the moment each team plays each other in total three times: at home twice in one year, and away twice the next year.

The introduction of Argentina could pave the way for just one home and away fixture every year without diminishing the total number of games played.

Great for Argentinian rugby tho i wonder if they are going to adopt a similar policy to overseas players that the other sanzar nations. I wonder what Sanzar will be called now?... Sanzarar?
