Eircom modem firewall AND router firewall?

Do I really need both? Anyone I ask about this says more protection's always good both I've found most firewalls to be a pain when it comes to gaming and the like. I have an Eircom Zyxel 660 modem (it's a router too but bad at it so I turned it off) bridged to an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. Both have firewalls.
