we're pretty much flat broke, and we need to record a couple of songs to give to promoters and stuff. we have our instruments (drums, bass and bass amp, guitar and guitar amp). we have a laptop, one cheap mic and cables etc.
what would be our best bet?

Take the time to get some cash saved up and go to a studio for a day. There are plenty of places around town where you could get it done for 3-400 Euro. If you are looking to impress people with your music, you need a recording done to a certain standard. Ignoring not having recording equipment, more importantly you probably don't have the engineering chops to get a good sounding recording done yourselves. Even if you were to start in earnest now, it would probably be a good 6 months to a year before you would start seeing results.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ as above
you have no option other than go to a good studio

do you seriously think a promoter is going to hire you from a recording made with the tools you have using no recording skills ?

ive been there when I was young and a dumb-ass

i assumed recording was a piece of piss and any gimpbucket could do it using any old crap lying around.

the truth is a billion miles away from this - ive got heavily into it and its as hard as becoming a decent musician.

do yourselves a favour and save up or sell something to finance 3 tracks in a good studio .

there is also a universal law - the more you put into something - the more you get back .

I have a degree in music production and have been recording and playing for many years.

    Go to a studio.

Make a deal with them for three songs.

    Thank us all later.

I completely agree with the above. Rehearse those 3 songs like mad. If you really know your stuff, there is no reason a decent engineer can not make you a cool sounding demo that showcases the band in one or two days.
