My timing belt gave in last night while driving. what's the possible scenarios i'm facing? it's a 1.9D '02 with 99,000km on the clock..

and the funny bit is i've had a new timing belt in the boot for 3 weeks now, surprisingly they dont work from there!!!!!!

    Thanks..

    Not good news Im afraid.

Not an expert on diesels, but in a petrol, the head has to come off (valves etc replaced)

Also, you'd want to get the big end bearings checked while you're at it.

Gonna be an expensive one mate!

If not an engine rebuild a replacement 2nd hand engine
might be an option. Ring around a few places for prices.

Volvo has a interference engine design (means valves come in contact with piston if belt breaks).

OP, surely you mean 99,000 miles? Your engine will be scrap by the way.

I have the same year car and engine.

This 1.9 Diesel (105 and 115 bhp) engine is a Renault engine sourced from various renaults models ( laguna, trafic etc.) of same year.
Volvo fitted stronger pistons and a few minor modifications.
Renault build very good diesel engines but the rest of their cars fall apart.
You could pick up a laguna of similar age for less than a grand.

They are exact same engine as my turbo blew at 150,000 and i sourced it from laguna. Currently 165,000 and running well but it is due 2nd timing belt so i must get around to it quickly!

Timing belt interval is 80,000 miles but i suppose it was prob never changed and has degraded with age.

    Good luck.
