Heard David Norris on Marian this morning, announcing his desire to run for president. I think he would be brilliant and major breath of fresh air. He mentioned a website, norris for president, but I couldnt find it.

    I did find this though,

What do people think of David Norris for president?

I hope he gets it. As you said a breath of fresh air. As the post is largely ceremonial, and any referring the President has to do is usually on the basis of Attorney General advice ,I think someone like Norris would be the perfect candidate.

One of the few people who can claim to have done something for the moral integrity of this country in helping to break down homophobic barriers, he would be the ideal candidate for the first presidential vote of the 21st century.

The position itself, of president, given that it is such a worthless position in this country, should just be done away with altogether. It's a complete waste of money and resources and is pretty much pointless.
I see no reason to keep the position intact, maybe someone else can enlighten us as to the point of it all ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,003 ✭✭✭bijapos

I agree it's essentially worthless, and it's few powers are mostly window dressing but fact is the post exists for the present, and I for one think somebody like Norris is the perfect candidate.

It's function is broadly to represent the country in a non political party based way, governments may come and go after a few months or years, the president stays. A lot of countries have a president in a role with very little real power (Germany, Italy), the role is usually representative.

At the very least I think the astronomical wages of the president in this country should be cut drastically, along with most of its security arrangements, and other expenses.

    A good choice indeed

I can't think of a better man for the job, but the Irish would never vote for a man with an upper-class British accent to be President.

    Isn't he Congolese ?

I signed the petition. He would be a great President.

They voted for Erskine Childers back in 1973 who had a very upper class British accent, Norris would certainly add some light relief from the economic difficulties facing Ireland.

    I'd vote for him.

And (AH style answer) Ireland would have a Queen!

He should be sent up the Aras as soon as possible.

I couldn't think of a more intelligent, articulate and honest person to become president.

Now all he has to do is change his given name to 'Mary' by deed-poll and he'll be a shoo-in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

He would definitely get my vote. Especially if the right "honourable" representative for the Drumcondra Mafia is running as well!

Sailing very close to double entendre territory there.

I used to like him more before he got that Newstalk gig. His voice is beginning to grate tbh.
Still, of all of the mooted candidates, he's my choice.

    Economics?

I think he's the perfect anti Bertie candidate!

I have not the foggiest what he stands for or against, but I reckon it'd be interesting viewing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

TBH the President is more or less a super ambassador for the country and David Norris would be perfect in that role, he is a very intelligent and articulate man. I would be proud to have him as our President.

(now contrast that with the Master of Disaster from Drumcondra....)

We've had two women as president of Ireland. Why not a third?:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,026 ✭✭✭Amalgam

I can't stand him, just.. annoying to the ear. Too bloody right on.

Having said that, it is quite probable that I'd vote for him to offset some of the other likely so and so's that will put their name into the hat.

If the two viable candidates are Norris or Bertie, I cant see myself voting for Bertie...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,245 ✭✭✭Fat_Fingers

Yes i would vote for him , i think Senator Shane Ross would also be good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,321 ✭✭✭IrishTonyO

No wouldn't vote for him, he is too annoying and hyper.
Granted better than Bertie, but then again good old George Hook has said if Bertie even attempts to run as a dog catcher he will run against him

They had no problem voting Erskine Childers Jnr?(well, he was Iirsh Born , up was brought up in the world, but certainly a good ffer)

Norris would shame the small minded, he mum was Irish and he can speak Irish

Could you say he was upper classs?

So given the double negative you will vote for someone because of there sexuality? That is an odd reason to vote for someone.

I would vote for him because he is fun, smart and honest. Hes fairly lefty which I am not but I see the president as a figurehead so it is more about style and vision than policies.

When I saw the title I thought Chuck Norris was running for president. Really disappointed now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,163 ✭✭✭✭Liam Byrne

He seems like an OK guy but his voice goes through me......"upper-class camp" is the only description that seems to fit, and I have to switch off any time I hear him.

EDIT : Having said that, if it comes down to himself and Ahern, I'll be out campaigning for Norris......someone's voice doesn't make them despicable.

I think he has many good qualities. He is articulate and makes a lot of sense most of the time. He needs to tone down his act though, and perhaps calm down also.

Ahem!...That is NOT an 'upper-class British accent', or any other type of British accent. It is a pretentious attempt at what he thinks is one !

Yes, I'd vote for Bertie - as president of a remote desert island, as far away as possible.

Is he a member of Labour?

Who else is likely to run?

    Michael D. Higgins?

Norris is an annoying twat at the best of times with that forced accent; can you imagine giving him some power?

Well you know this is Ireland not Norway not sweden we have a very conservative electorate and wheter you like it or not his sexuality in a presedential race would be a significant issue.

    No

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I think he is a great choice and I sure would vote for him.

It would show Ireland as a modern inclusive society ( even if its not ) and show we are ready and able to throw off the shackles of our oppressors ( the RC church ) to move forward as a better nation.

I think I could be convinced to campaign for the chap I'm that pro Norris. ( As long as I don;t have to listen to him mind ! ) :D

    He's independant.

One thing I have a big problem with Norris being president is the fact he wants us to rejoin the commonwealth.Should an Irish head of state be of such an opinion? It surely wouldn't go down well with the electorate, definitely didn't with me when I first heard it.Also, I don't think we should have a pro-commonwealth president for the 2016 commeration.

Not going to happen sadly. He won't be able to get nominated.

I think the position of president would give him less power than he currently has as a senator.

Yeah the President have effectively no power. Effectively an extension of Bord Failte.

I am sure that Bertie Ahern has his eye on that job, promised already. He needs to set up his tent in the park now that it is no longer at he Galway races.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,729 ✭✭✭Pride Fighter

I think FF will go with Brian Crowley over Bertie.

Michael D would be Labours candidate for sure, maybe Dick Spring.

Fine Gael have no heavyweights to run IMO, maybe Garrett Fitzgerald.

Independents would be Norris obviously maybe Dana (shudders).

    Could be an interesting election.
