A friend has a 2007 Meganne. Fuel gauge stopped working so brought it to the main dealer. They replaced the fuel pump for some reason - is the fuel sensor in the pump?

Also the problem still isn't fixed - so it must not have been the pump. It seems electrical. How long do you leave it before you stop paying the garage to test out their theories by putting in new parts that you are paying for.

Do you just have to keep paying for the parts you don't need until they get lucky and fix the problem?

    Isn't it under warranty?

I would imagine that your friend would have noticed the fuel gauge not working before leaving / shortly after leaving the garage and would have questionned the garage as to why it isn't fixed. Also I would have asked them to justify why do they expect him / her to pay for the fuel pump when from your post there seemed to be no issues with it. Perhaps the fuel pump was in bits and somehow effecting the fuel sender ?

Either way, as you mention, trial and error is not the most efficient way of diagnosing a problem. They probably don't have a clue what they are doing, nor do they give a sh1t unfortunately by the sounds of it.

I'd be straight back down to them.

The sensor is integrated with the pump so that's why the pump was replaced. I'd imagine that was a pretty expensive job and very annoying that the car was sent back unfixed. Not acceptable - but also not surprising given the sloppy customer service and poor diagnostic skills of many garages.

Nope - in 2007 they were given 2 years.

how much did they charge your friend for this seemingly useless fuel pump swap ?

All jokes aside even if it was under warranty it still wouldn't be fixed, disgrace.

I think he said it cost around 450. Pump, Tank seal and labour.

did they claim to have fixed it ? Poor show either way, get him to write to renault ireland if the dealer does not sort it without expecting more cash.
