Very Noisey Pump in Apartment

    Hey Folks,

The lady and myself have moved into a new rented apartment. It's pretty cool but the pump that activates when you flush the toilet or turn a tap on is deafening. We were thinking of mentioning it to the landlord. I know they may not want to do anything about it but we are willing to go halves on the costs.

Is it possible to replace a pump like this with something quieter or do something that makes things quiter. It really is incredibly loud.

    Many thanks folks.

Some of the sound is the pipes vibrating as they go through the wall.
Try moving the pump slightly when its running and see if it makes a difference. Also try and move the pipes where they go through the wall ,maybe even make the holes a bit bigger to loosen the pipes.

see if he will ask an electrician to put the pump on a timer so it wont turn on after set time

You cant do that the taps wont work.

What you can do is slide a tile in under the pump and silicone the pump to the tile and the tile to the floor. Use a lot of silicone from the tube,. It Acts as a cushion and the tile acts as a damper.

You will have to explain that better but it sounds like you put the timers on because you have a pressure drop due to a leak or something and then the pump has to overwork in the morning to repressurise.

When you did not report it to the landlord then how will he know? Try reporting it. Landlords nowadayds are sh** scared of tenants and will do all they can to oblige for fear you move out. If he does not repair it tell him you will and give him the bill. Seems like he will do it then.

sorry joey, the op said the pump is noisey when you flush the loo or turn on the taps.i thought he was just concerned about the noise as he didnt mention a leak.i have fitted timers because some concerned residents were worried about noisey pumps after flushing toilets late at night.i understand that the system will not refill until the timer switches on the next morning .cheers

Silicon idea posted is good, a simpler/cheaper solution MAY be to put a thickish piece of polystyrene under the pump. Many of the noises of these sorts of things is 'cos they are laid on the floorboards and it reverberates all over the place.....

Other sources of noise are the valves opening and shutting, not so easy to sort.

    Unfortunately pumps are noisy.....mostly.

I hear you but if you turn off a pump in an apartment the plumbing does not work and as the system drains slowly you will end up with airlocks which will cause cavitation of the pump and may break it.

Good idea barry but for fire safety you cannot put anything like this under a pump. Nothing may happen but I would not bet on it.

The reason I suggested the tile is partially for this reason. Another suggested reason is fire safe plaster board but to go into a tile shop and ask for a pce of 60x30 porc as a sample "you want to match" to your kitchen tile will cost you nothing.
