Can any one suggest a program like picasa. Don't like picasa because it arranges all the pics itself and because it is said to be spyware.

    1) Not aware of it being associated with spyware
    2) image arrangement and it trawling your system by monitoring certain places like your desktop or my pictures folder can be turned off.

I could do with a decent organiser myself, I'm terrible. I have folders scattered all over the pc. Or at least I used to, at least I've begun to sort them into sections and split up my photography stuff from the family snaps :D

I remember trying Picasa a long time back, but hated it. I thought it would be much improved by now.

I use Picasa myself but am looking to upgrade in the next few months to get better image editing features. I love the way Picasa scans your hard drive & automagically lists your pics - but as you say it isnt for everyone.

Bibble is worth a look, or Adobe Lightroom.

I tried Lightroom & found the file management too complicated, havent tried bibble but it seems to be capable. I dont know of any free s/w that will do what Picasa does.

If you dont care about library management or tagging, then irfanview is free, good, & easy to use, or GIMP is free, good, & hard to use.

Picasa is not spyware. It is made by Google and you can download it without toolbars etc. Most arrange pictures but usually you can configure that.

Suggestions (so many!) depends on what functionality you want, just organisation or a some light photo editing on top of that.

Whats already on your PC/Mac (iPhoto/Windows Gallery)

What came with your camera/PC (nearly all come with something)

    Adobe Elements

    Corel Paintshop photo express

A bunch of them here with reviews

I use lightroom a lot, but cannot get to grips with it's file managing system, I just export to chosen folders and then they go into my photography main folder. I really should have a better system. I don't even know where the back ups go when i back up in LR lol

I know this is a bit OT, but Lightroom has no file management system, unless you set it up yourself. You import RAWs into whatever system you set up yourself and you export finished jpegs for web or printing or whatever, to me these are temp files to be deleted every month or so, the RAWs are the ones to be backed up for future use.

To the OP I'd ask what do you want? free? OSS? Or if you are willing to pay I'd suggest looking at something like ACDSee

Ah right, no wonder I can't understand it, it doesn't exist :D

It does back up your files though? All i do in LR is develop, export to a chosen folder when done, and save the original in another folder.

When you import the original that should be it, you back it up from there but it should always be in its original folder.

Anyway this video was done for LR1 but the principles still hold true,

me neither, but i don't like the way google slip in their updater - as a service (on windows) rather than an application.

Thanks for the feedback. Picasa will be OK as you can turn off the part which automatically arranges the pics. Is that in the install it is turned off or later. I do not want it to happen before i see it

As for spyware, well I have seen it linked to spyware but it may have been the updater they were talking about
