    http://www.news.com.au/world/korean-baby-dies-as-parents-kim-yoo-chul-and-choi-mi-sun-raise-virtual-bub/story-e6frfkyi-1225837180407
Korean baby dies as parents Kim Yoo-chul and Choi Mi-sun raise virtual bub

A COUPLE addicted to computer games let their real baby starve to death while raising a virtual daughter online.
Police said the couple spent up to 12 hours a day at internet cafes, leaving their three-month-old daughter home alone at their apartment in Suwon, South Korea.
Police said the couple became obsessed with living online and neglected their real lives, The Sun reports.
They raised an avatar baby through their profiles on a Second Life-style game called PRIUS, while their real daughter was given just one bottle of milk a day.
Father Kim Yoo-chul, 41, and mom Choi Mi-sun, 25, called the emergency services when they returned from one online session in September last year and found their daughter dead.
"We found she had passed away when we woke up in the morning," they said.
But cops became suspicious about how severely dehydrated the baby was.
A spokesman for the National Scientific Criminal and Investigation Laboratory, which carried out an autopsy on the girl, said, "she appears to have starved to death because she was not fed for such a long period of time."
The girl was initially well cared for by her grandmother but her health deteriorated after she moved back in with her parents.
Police tried to arrest the parents but they disappeared after the baby's funeral.
Authorities caught up with them Tuesday and charged them with child abuse and neglect.
The couple told police of their guilt after their arrests.
"Due to our sense of guilt, we have not been to a PC gaming room over these five months," they said.
Online games are massively popular in South Korea.
A 28-year-old man dropped dead recently after playing his favorite game Starcraft for 50 hours non-stop without eating or drinking.

 I can't even fathom how people could do this.

    Fcuking sad.

"Due to our sense of guilt, we have not been to a PC gaming room over these five months,"

Shouldn't go for the rest of you fcuking lives if your sorrow is heart felt.

Also if you're spending 12 hours a day at an internet cafe living a virtual life, you might as well just ****ing kill yourself if you've no interest in living in the real world.

There are places in Dublin were I see the same guys playing those Warfare games every time I go in.

Asian people never seem look rough though, they are always clean shaven and well dressed.

Irish people playing games that long would look like Charles fcuking Manson within twelve hours :pac:

Now that you mention it, Asian people in general always look clean shaven. You rarely see them with stubble. I wonder if it's a genetic or a cultural thing. Weird, never thought about that before.

Its a genetic thing, their hair is thinner I think.

Okay, that's the hair sorted, but have you ever seen them sleep or eat??

I don't even think they blink

In no way defending this but its a very very different culture here.

I very much doubt the above quote (in english) is completely accurate to what they actually said (in korean).

Regardless though, utter lunacy. Game addiction is a serious problem in Korea.

Actually, I doubt all fcuking translations.

From seeing a LOT of foreign movies in the IFI, I know for certain that subtitles are a load of cock.

They rarely match what's truly being said.

Actually their hair is thicker, or stronger at least.

The reason they always look clean shaven etc is probably that you've never been to Asia :P Plenty of dirty unshaven lads here.

But for the majority, i.e > if you have a job. Looks are extremely important, women/men won't go outside without cleaning themselves up.

Plus, in Japan and Korea anyways, public baths/sauna's/steam rooms are hugely popular. A common thing to do is to get out, get drunk, go to the local steam room/sauna and then go home or just sleep the night there and go to work the next day.

    .

I dunno, they never have hairy legs either tbh.

This is all i could find sorry

"Yes, Asians have the silkiest, straightest and thickest hair. HOWEVER, if you're referring to their "body" hair, then they have the least on average. Europeans, South Americans, and Middle Easterners/Indians have the most body hair."

Here's an example for you, one of the worst insults you can do in Korean would be to call someone older their name, especially your older brother/sister, that'll get you smacked around the place :pac:

Or the best one. If I'm meeting you in a bar and you call me asking me where I am. In English I say "I'm coming" In Korean you'd say "I'm going".

Korean 보신탕 pronounced Bosintang would translate directly to "Good health stew".

Anyone want to hazard a guess what's in it ? :pac:

Just on that point, I came across this yesterday (Don't ask why I was looking it up).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheese-eating_surrender_monkeys
In the European French-language version of that Simpsons episode, Willie's line was dubbed as "singes mangeurs de fromage" (cheese-eating monkeys) without any mention of "surrender". The line does not translate easily because "surrender" forms part of an English compound noun. The rules of French syntax do not allow such ready formation of nouns by noun stem compounding.

I meant where they do have hair its thicker/stronger ;)

On a side note yes they do have hairy legs, just a lot less hair then we do.

Before anyone accuses me of taking advantage of and fondling Asian men after a few drinks, I'm married to a Korean (woman).

Thanks for the clarification. Game addiction a massive problem alright. Will stay out of the hair debate ;)

Recently? That happened in 2005. That article is rife with errors.

lol this is gonna make me sound weird but i live in a house with a korean bloke (He lives in the shed). But we were having a few beers and he start rubbing my leg. I was wearing shorts. I was slagging him saying hes gay and all the rest when he turned around and said he just likes the feel of hair! Cue more laughing until we realised he hadnt got any hair on his legs. We checked and his legs were babys arse bald with the exception of a single hair sticking out of his shin! he said koreans dont grow hair anywhere except their head and pubic region.

    But anyway ye, dead babies...

    :o

They didn't even learn from it. Not content with letting their real baby die, they've ignored the virtual one for 5 months too.

Exactly what I was thinking. If they're spending 12 hours a day in a net cafe, it'd be a lot cheaper to just get their own bloody computer!

Plus, they'd be nearer the baby and whatnot

Koreans are mad for their games. I usually went into the Asian internet cafes in Oz/NZ as they had really comfy seats and loads of films downloaded. They were usually dark and full of Asians at the back gaming. Their desks were full of fast food rubbish. They looked really unhealthy.

Without wanting to sound racist and alarm the alway on guard pc brigade on boards, asians in general seem to have addictive personalites, gambling for example is huge all over asia even when compared to european levels.

Yes, in the Socialist Paradise of the Democratic People's Republic, the child wouldn't have starved to death because it's parents were online playing a video game, it would just starve to death the old fashioned way.
Terrible story, stupid parents, but this thread is great for learning about Asia!:D

I find the term 'addiction' highly subjective.

There's nothing hypocritical in what i said, i said asians seem to have addictive personalities, particularly with gambling and they do, where i come from (Ireland, you're correct) has nothing to do with it. Step into any casino around dublin and you'll likely find it teaming with asians, proportionaly far more than you'll find in most other types of establishment. (cue smart arse comments about chinese restaurants:D)
