Suggestion to rules of photographic challenges

Now i am not doing this to cause arguments and is just a suggestion.

I just wondering what people would think of only having one vote per challenge.

as in its not like the random thread where every phot you think is good you thank. so you wait til a few photos are in and then you thank which you think is the overall best one.

which means you only get one vote. Make it a bit more interesting and more critical on the photos.

You could vote straight away if you like but if something better comes along you can remove your thanks if you like.

Just a suggestion and not here to rock the boat. But was thinking it would make it a bit more interesting.

    Thanks for readin

    Martin

Would you think it would be interesting to have one vote in the assignments ? 13 votes

Yes, one vote would make it interesting
    0% 0 votes
    No, keep it the same
    100% 13 votes

na i prefear the thanks method simply because you could think the first photo on the first page is the best and after 3 days you vote for it, but then a week later someone posts a better pic, if you only had one thanks what would you do then? as i think it would be unfair to unthank the first one again.

P.S. i think you mean assignment or do you mean photo challange (which followed a strict set of rules) cause i havnt seen a challange in ages.

    yeah i meant assignment.

well then the decision is yours you can wait til the last day to vote if you want. just thought it would stir it up a bit and make thanking a post worth more.

I had always thought that if there was a change to be made, maybe it could be along the lines of you could only vote (for as many photos as you wanted) if you entered a photo. But thats just me thinking aloud. On the Internet. In quiet.

that is actually a fair change alright. might not attract a lot of traffic knowing that you are excluded from voting if you dont submit.

I was thinking more about my one vote system though.

the assignment runs for 2 weeks ( it is a mini competition because you win the choice of next assignment.)
So if you submit your picture and have to wait til the last few days to find out. it would add to the suspense of it all. And with any photography competition all the entries are submitted before judging starts . You could choose to vote on a picture on the first day of the assignment but you are doing the assignment and possibly someone elses photo an injustice.

also if it is the start of week 2 and i see that someone has got 30 votes ( for argument sake) i would be turned off from submitting a picture as i know i wont win at least this way you feel like you have a chance right to the end.

Also maybe because you have only one vote it would be more of a photograpghy competition rather than a popularity one. ( not that this happens ...... but it might a bit:rolleyes:)

    Interesting discussion.

I like the idea of only voting at the end (similar to the old challenges).
Can the thumbs up be turned off for the duration of the assignment and only be switched back on for the voting period? Maybe a mod might answer that one?

I don't like the idea of only being able to vote if you've entered. That's too restrictive and there are a lot of people who lurk/vote but never enter. I wouldn't like to see anyone excluded from voting.

I also like the idea of "one man - one vote" (what, you mean women can vote too )

    More discussion please......

    Interesting discussion.
    ... [snip]
    More discussion please......

I'm new here and a novice. However - since you're asking...

I quite like the way it works right now. I visit every couple of days or so probably wouldn't bother time my visit for the end AND then review all entries in one sitting. (Also Less effort for mods enforcing vote counts)

If it's not broken don't fix it !!

    Just my opinion!

You see there isnt always a clear winner either, i can only think of one maybe two where i have thought that picture was a clear winner, longshanks planet tennis ball one stands out and even the current one running now. Sometimes there are 3 pictures that i find could be worthy winners and cannot pick a definitive one out of the three to win what would you do in that suituation?

Also i beleive that if your going down the route of 2 day voting you are eliminating a lot of people from voting, not everyone is active every 48hours (esepcailly if its a weekend) so i feel that less people would vote as oppossed to being able to vote over the whole period.

However if it does go down the road of 2 day voting (bbbboooooooooo:p) would it not just be handier for the OP, of the assignment, to post a poll that only opens the day the assignment ends and finishes 2 days later far far simpler way of doing thing as you can only vote once in a poll anyways.

ok homer i never said for the voting to take place last 2 days. You can vote anytime you want. It makes sense howes to leave it until the end to see most of the submissions. As for voting for multiple photos. I think one vote will make you look more critically at a photo. Its very daunting for beginners competing with photos that have 20 votes already after them. This way encourages more entries. The idea with the poll wont work as if i post 3 pictures it will create confusion. It was a simple idea to make it more interesting for both voter and submitter. But if we include complexity like polls it will immediately turn people off the idea.

....but all this assumes that everybody submits their entry before 'X' date. As it is, its possible a winning entry only a few hours before the closing date.

You would be left with a situation of all pics to be taken between Dates 'A' & 'B', they all need to be uploaded by date 'C' and then the poll would open between dates 'D' & 'E'.....to much hassle if you ask me.
The whole thing is just a bit of fun

i know its only a bit of fun and i do quite enjoy it. but it would be interesting to see the outcome.

and you would not have to change any time frame criteria. you can submit your picture and cast your vote when ever you like .

but it would benefit you as a poster to have your picture in early ( as always)

and benefit you as a voter to vote late so you see the most amount of submission. the only difference is you only get one. vote. i understand it does change the dynamics slightly. but for the better i think because of the fore mentioned points

Well i dont agree with it being just the one vote, its not to say your idea is a bad one just that i prefear they way that it works at the minute , i think we can all agree its a bit of fun as ray foley says "just a bit of fun for your lunchtime, nothing too serious" ive said before that if it wasnt fun i wouldnt enter so as long as it remains a bit of craic weather its with multiple votes or one vote i'll still have a go at it, usuall failing miseribally mind :p ....

I m liking the poll idea. Werent the 'old' comps like that. But then, who makes the polls... how long do they keep open.... Ahhh questions questions!

its totally fun. i just thought it would make it more fun by adding a bit of suspense and excitment.

becuase some assignments you can see who the winner is from the start with all the votes. and you might as well as put your photo in the random thread.

the guy who invented bread thought it was great til it came sliced....... :D

just a quick thing. would it be worth trying?

as everyone is saying that i like it the way it is but ....... nobody knows what its like the other way. i think its worth a shot/

I understand where you're coming from. Martron. I'm just not sure if it'll work for assignments. As others said, it's more like the competitions used to be. But still. Maybe worth a try.

But assignment to me is a little bit like the random thread together with pic of the week, just that you have a theme and need to take the picture during a specific period of time. And that's what I like. To see how many people like my picure (I know, I haven't posted in assignments for ages!) even though there might be a winner from the beginning on.
To me assignments are first of all for me to get a different view on things (and therefore to see if it works for others as well what I tried to achive) and second to win (which probably never would happen anyway;)). So I don't think the one vote would have the same effect.

Oh. And Pullandbang: Yes, sorry, but we are allowed to vote for about 100 years now :D:D:D
(I know. You miss the good old times:cool:)

Great idea done on alot of other sites, basically done as a poll, all the pictures are put together in one post at the end, then a few days of voting, works well. Current system here is flawed in my eyes, though i see it as a bit of fun so it doesnt bother me too much

If you put up a picture early it has more time to get thank you s than one put up late.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,930 ✭✭✭Martron

if the challenges used to be one vote per person does any one know the reason it was changed to multi voting?

As you said Xia its just like the random thread and pic of the week. te only difference it has a set theme.so you could just post in them threads.Making this thread not so different

i am not trying to make it more competitive i think it just makes it more critical and phots are judged more on composition etc etc instead of thanking a picture because who posted it or because it has nice fluffy clouds in it . anyway i see that people dont like change.

cant blame a guy for trying!

I posted a picture on the second to last day or last day a few challenges go and it got the most votes. It could be that the late entries get looked at more as they are on the later pages and people don't bother going back through the thread?

The old challenges were run completely different. The pictures were submitted to a separate website, one per person, and were kept hidden until the poling was opened. There were also a lot less entries iirc. Not sure why it stopped working like that but it was a lot of effort for the guy (think it was DarrenG??) to sort out the entries on his website etc. It also took a lot longer to complete the process as 2 weeks was given for the picture taking and another week or so for the voting.

The assignments are a lot more informal for want of a better word. They encourage people to go out and shoot and get involved, for a n00b it's a lot less daunting to get involved in the assignments than it was to enter one of the challenges.

All that said I don't see why the assignments and the challenges couldn't run simultaneously.

I think there is room for both the Challenge and the Assignment.

And I think that say, after every 50 posts on the Random Thread , there should be an automatic post giving the link to the Assignment/New Challenge link.

I would say that 50% of Random posters don't know about the Assignment thread.
