By jiujitsu I presume you mean some kind of grappling?

There are a host of solutions to the mats problem ranging from the expensive to the less expensive, to the easy buy and lay solution, to the more difficult DIY.

You can buy new Judo mats, Zebra mats or similar high quality high density mats from online retailers based in ireland like jap sports or fightlord http://www.fightlordshop.com/cat.php?cat=122&Level1=28.

These work quite expensive, so you might try and find some second hand judo mat for sale, which can also be expensive. Some of the guys have got gymnastics maps for good value, which are usually 'softer' than the wrestling and judo mats.

Other approaches are to buy sheets of foam from a Builders Providers or some such store and get a vinyl/tarpaulin/similar covering. Bit messy if you're not fairly handy.

If you're really only starting out and have a real small place, Smyths and other toy shops/ kids stores sell playground jig saw mats which can be used for low impact rolling (ground wrestling).

Having a similar problem myself at our ju jitsu club. Our instructor has decided to stop running the club and has sold all our mats, but we still have a few members who would like to keep it going.

Our old mats were the jigsaw type and were pretty good. Anyone have any advice? Would it be better to buy them new or perhaps say contact leisure centres to try and buy some mats from them? We aren't really sure where to get them

I recently bought these jigsaw mats on ebay for the gym I've set up in my extension at home.

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170426036724

They are 25 mm thick which is 5mm thicker than the ones in Smyths, they also come with the edging too, the Smyths ones don't. Each mat is 2ft x 2ft.

For the amount I got (144sq ft), it would have cost me €225 in Smyths. I got a better mat delivered to my door in about 3 days from the UK for €156.

They are ok for rolling and home use, I wouldn't fancy doing throws or heavy takedowns on them. If you wanna see what they look like laid out in my gym send me a pm.
