Thinking about buying an 2004/2005 C-Max for the Mrs. Is there anything that I should look for with these? Which would be the better car the 1.6 diesel or petrol? She wouldn't be doing big mileage. Does the diesel have the dreaded dual mass flywheel? Thanks for any help on this.

Pretty certain this does have the DMF but apart from that the diesel would be the better car (if bought for around the same money of course). As regards the dual mass flywheel ,a lot of places in the UK are selling a solid flywheel/clutch kit which is cheaper to buy than a new DMF and should eliminate any future problems....worth remembering if you are ever unfortunate enough to have to replace this silly piece of modern engineering.

The dual mass flywheel are grand, never any trouble with them ones in the 1.6 TDCI.

Personally i'd go for the 1.6 petrol, quicker and extremely reliable.

I have the 1.6 diesel, never a spot of bother, just over 800kms on a fill for around the town driving

I have the 04 1.6 petrol zetec for the last two years and haven't had it serviced yet! Runs itself, drives well, like your missus I don't do big mileage and when we do travel away there is loads of room for the kids things.

I bought two front tyres for it about a month ago and apart from oil, that is all I have spent on it so I've been pretty happy with it!

I have an '04 1.6 TDCi (110HP), one of the first to come out, which was an ex-rental. When I bought it I test drove the 1.6 petrol back to back with the diesel, and I must say the petrol felt pretty slow and uninspiring after having driven the diesel. Not a spot of bother with it so far apart from a recall issue (rear wiper motor) and a problem with the boot release switch.

    I ran 2 x 110bhp 1.6 TDCI's, and 1 x 1.6 petrol.

The diesels were much better to drive tbh.

Make sure and go for at least the Zetec model, the LX/Active models are pretty basic.

was the oil for top up or did you do an oil change ? If you havent changed the oil in two years its defo overdue, well worth doing.

The C-Max does not do very well in the ADAC breakdown statistics, it's below average for its class. The main problems are as follows (this is translated from German using Babelfish but you get the idea)

Disturbances in the engine management (Petrol and Diesel of all years of construction)
Turbo-hoses slipped, turbochargers defective (until 2006)
Recycling of exhaust gases defective (Diesels until 2006)
    Steering wheel locks wedge (2006)
Electrical power steering systems defective (until 2006)
    Generators defective (until 2006)
    Schaltgestänge put out (2008)

Babelfish doesn't know what "Schaltgestänge" is, does anyone know?

    Gearbox linkage, I'd guess.

    That's interesting :)
The Fords are prone to turbo and intercooler hoses coming off, happend a newish Mondeo I had in 2005, they main dealer claimed it a common fault. The EGR issues are common to most diesels so that's nothing at all to be ashamed of.

Thanks for all the replies. I am considering going for a 2005 Corolla Verso 1.6 petrol as an alternative to the C-Max. Does any one have an opinion whether this is a good move and what should I look out for?

Just one last question when does the timing belt need to be done on the C-Max?
