Just watched this not expecting much, but actually found it kinda inspirational.

I think he was very foolish setting out on the challange in the first place, that said, fair play to him for taking it seriously and doing the business. From watching the first program, he seems to have gone through hell, and just kept going. Much respect to Eddie!!!

Looking forward to the next 2 weeks already!! I think I need to buy the DVD when it comes out.

Have to agree with you. Mate of mine is involved with kidney awareness, won an award this week for it, maybe it could aid the cause if someone did something like this! :)

Would have been more impressive if he didn't stop for three hours or so during on of his "marathons" and get pi$$ed and eat ice-cream.

How he chooses to carbo load is his own business :pac:

Yep but it was more a mental thing for him , Shows what people are capable of even without training . He might not run fast but to keep going day after day was impressive.
Wonder what I could manage if I had the time, the money and a full time physio living in my icecream van...

For unlimited supplies of beer and ice cream and access to a fit physio whenever I wanted it I'd do a marathon a day over hot coals:D

I was flabbergasted watching it - almost lost for words! A stupendous achievement. I've never paid too much attention to him before but I hold him in very high regard now after just the first of 3 episodes.

So running that distance while full of ice cream and pi$$ed isn't an achievement;)

I didn't think he would manage it when news of it surfaced last year here, but that was a good program and looking forward to the next parts.

I want an ice cream now.

Couldn't agree more. Was almost uncomfortable watching it. How he did what he did is beyond me. Shows how powerful the mind is. Loved the way he switched off from what he was doing and concentrated on his surroundings.
absolute legend for what he did.

Its funny reading that old thread, few of people had to eat their own words after he finished it :D

Just watching the first ep this evening, impressive to be honest...while he wasn't a pro he still went through alot of pain and kept going when alot of people would have taken the easy way out.

Total elitism and arrogance seems like to some people here that you need to either finish a marathon within a certain time or be of a certain caliber!!!!!

He completed over 270 mils in a few days!!!!! have a look at the 1000 mile challenge and see how many people have completed that mileage since 1st of jan no matter how much drink or ice cream they have consumed !!!!:eek

Just watched this myself and was not really impressed. I'm not jealous, elitist or green eyed just rational. I can comfortably walk 3 miles per hour so could cover the marathon in 10 hours with plenty of pit stops (I realise he got quicker as the Challenge went on). But what's the point ?

I just don't get these events and I hate the "oh yeah but it was for charity" justification. If he wanted to raise money for charity surely a series of comedy gigs with all proceeds going to charity would have been a better route!

    Maybe I'm just cynical.

LOL - he stopped and went on the piss *during* one of the marathons. Its an achievement that he managed to walk the remaining 13 miles despite being locked.

I think the point the Izzard proves is that anyone can complete a multi marathon event(slowly). Fair play to him to keep going but just shows that it doesnt take superhuman ability to do it.

It doesn't take superhuman physical ability to complete, it does take a good bit above the average mental ability though. Anyone is physically capable of walking/ running slowly for a very, very long way, getting through the pain of it though and keeping going is another matter. Most people would give up before they got to the end of their road.

yep i did say that earlier in the thread :) . Also most people dont have a camera on them so might help you too keep going if half the world will see you giving up:)

Caught this last night, great program. Part of me still doesn't believe he really did it though! :D

But of bunch of comedy gigs wouldn't be much of a challenge, he wanted to do something he hadn't done before and because he hardly ever ran before and wasn't very fit the running challenge was a hard one for him.

The look on that first docs face at the beginning of the program where he said what he was about to do was great, and pretty much waht all of us would have been thinking before he did it as well.

Recently heard that a friend is planing on doing 4 marathons in 4 weeks in a couple of months time. I don't think they had previously done a huge amount of running before, well it was all about the skiing when I saw them, but it's possible that the likes of Izzard doing his thing unconsiously made it seem like a more feasible idea for them to attempt.

The real challenge for them though is that they want to do them all in under 4 hours though, Izzards aim of basically just plodding along in no particular rush was much more acheivable:

Funny you say that. I know a guy with a similar background and he is doing 8 in 8 weeks all under 4 hrs as well. There must be somebody doing 16 in 16 under 4hrs :)
