    Hi all,

I work as security at Cork Airport. For over a year now I have seen a pilot in full uniform traveling through the airport here in Cork, he is usually on Aer Lingus flights as a pax to either Heathrow or Schipol. I guess he is commuting to work in either of these airports. I haven't quiet made out the name of the airline on his uniform or ID badge but I'm sure it's not any of the Irish airlines. As we don't see this in Cork that often, I've only ever seen this guy! I was wondering have many of you people seen this; Pilots commuting to work in their uniforms? Is it common? This guy in particular is young maybe 24/25 definitely Irish and usually seems pretty business like and not chatty so I haven't got the chance to talk with him! He is cute tho :)
Also, if any pax using Cork in the past have gotten talking with him on one of the flights...where does he go/work with etc??
Or if he is on here could he tell me??!!
As I said at the top, I'm being very nosey I know ; )

I doubt if she is gay, flutterinbantam. To answer her question. Yes it's common enough for pilots to commute. I remember working for an airline where one Captain commuted from Portugal to Dublin. I was going to suggest Ryanair as invariably most of them are based somewhere other than where they live. My guess is some long haul airline, KLM at a guess given the destination of schipol. It's often worth commuting because long haul allows more time off in between. But even a Ryanair pilot can have four days off at a time.

There was a Ryanair cabin crew stood in the queue infront of me to board a flight back to Dublin on Monday morning with the rest of us cattle. Didn't notice if they were letting her through with an oversized bag or anything though.

You're not the security member who frisked me unnecessarily last January by any chance?

    You're hot!!

flutterinbantam: As already pointed out to you, I'm not "ghey", I'm female, not uncommon for females to hold security positions you know!
Thank you airvan for your informative reply, that's what I was looking for!
I'm not sure about KLM though, his uniform was navy, he didn't wear a hat, he wore 3 gold stripes on jacket and on the epaulets of the shirt, so co-pilot right?
He wore a lanyard with his ID badge on and it had on it an unfamiliar name to me, so I don't think he is with one of the airlines I know anyway!
Do airlines "hire" in pilots to fly for them? I mean, could he work for a company who supply contract pilots to airlines? Thats why I didn't recognise the uniform?
Staker: If I was the one who frisked you "firmly", take it as a compliment!
God! I feel like a stalker speaking about this pilot like this but I'm honestly just curious!
And be nice guys, as you can see I'm new here!! ;)

    Apologies.

He may possibly have been jumpseating on a flight- some airlines allow it provided that the crew member is in uniform. Saw it myself with Ryanair in Faro once ;)

Stepthisway Welcome to Boards.ie but...I don't think this is the place to track down your pilot...just go talk to him if that's what you want to do, this is not the place to reveal anyone's identity etc.

    Ok....
Someone I know who frequents this site far more often than me told me about this one and I'm pretty sure I'm the the one being discussed here!
Very observant security staff at ORK! I never thought people took any notice of me walking through there or anywhere really!
Anyway, for anybody interested, I use ORK twice a month to go/come from work. I work for a charter company and they position me to CDG, AMS or LHR where I start work and fly somewhere wierd usually! Africa, Russia, Mid East, Asia (I'm in Khartoum tonight).
I work a month on and a month off and always use ORK, I'm either going to or coming from work and therefore in uniform! I'll be passing through on my way home on March 22nd!
She was spot on with the age too!
    Surreal..

Generally if your commuting through various ports to get to work you will land somewhere and straight onto their aircraft for work hence already in uniform, If they are commuting as part of their duty and its paid for by particular airline employer then you need to wear the kit, also in the uniform you would be surprised of the doors it opens the upgrades you get and the staff you can meet including the security staff :-), it may seem odd to others and you get plenty of "" Shouldnt you be sitting up the front! "" type lines but such is the work pattern that goes with the job, Its a very common occurence in the states and common enough in particular hubs in Europe, london, amsteram, frankfurt etc etc.
Some people thrive on it and some dont like it and cover up with a jumper or something, each to their own.

    Yeager,

Your comments are dead right, the company usually keep my itineraries pretty tight. For example when I started work this time at the end of Feb. it was EI to AMS arriving at 0830-0900 then straight into the right seat of one of our a/c for a 1015 departure to Dakar. Which leaves no time for changing and therefore I have to travel from home in uniform. It's the same on the way home, finish a flight in AMS/LHR or where ever then run to make my connecting flight home. Sometimes we are arriving the same time as the EI flight that's gonna bring me home and if it's looking like I'll miss it I might mention something to the crew over the radio and ask them to hold on for 5 please!
Sorry for delaying other pax but we need to receive some perks this job aint what it used to be! And it's never more than 5/10mins or the slot would be gone.
With regards wearing the uniform as a pax "opening up doors" as you say, not really in my experience only in CDG a few times never in AMS or LHR or even ORK!
It's true about traveling in uniform, some people I know love it and others don't like it. I can take it or leave it to be honest.
One good thing about arriving lateish before a flight though, is that the Captain has to do all the pre flight planning and paper work as I wouldn't have the time, which makes a welcome break from the norm!
