Student Financial Problems

    Hello all,
In college in Dublin. Doing an extremely difficult course, not really what I expected but I like it. I was on a CoCo grant in first year, but I failed one exam too many and I wasn't able to progress into second year, so I wasn't able to renew my grant. I failed the repeat. Funny story really, I almost missed the exam while studying for it and the shock really took its toll on the exam. I nearly wet myself. People bandy that one about but I nearly did.
So now, I'm here with no grant. Thats not the end of the world but what I'm really afraid of now, are my parents. They didn't like the fact i had no grant, but the were ok about it. I'm extremely frightened of what they are going to say or do. Money is very tight at home and I always felt like a bigger burden by coming to college. I wanted to get a loan but they didn't want me in debt. I was counting on the grant and so were my parents. I honestly terrified of how they are going to take, especially my dad. Hes tough going at the best of times, and we get on well, but he freaks out over the smallest of things. This isn't small and I'm afraid of what he'll do. He could pull me out of college, which is fair enough, but i'll lose all my friends and everything.

What I'm in dire need of is advice, and any way to source some financial aid with my parents knowing, cos I know in my heart that I can't tell them.

    Regards

    sfp

    Hi Op,

I know the current climate isn't ideal but could you not look for a part time job. Or worse case scenario try get a full time job and go back studying evenings in September, then you'll be financially dependant to a certain degree and studying. Then you wont feel under compliment to your parents.

    Sorry OP,

I meant to say financially independant.

I assume you meant without your parents knowing.

You should go speak with someone in your college about what aid is offered...different colleges have different options. Some will be means tested if your getting money from your parents so it will be hard to not tell them. Other then that take a good look at your expenses and see if you can make some cuts. See if your college offers work study or else look for some part time work or take a year out and see if you can build up some savings as a cushion.

Do you actually enjoy your course? Your fears for leaving college seem to be more about losing your friends and lifestyle than your education. You can try and get a job and stay in Dublin and maintain those rather than staying in a course you're not that into just for the sake of keeping your social circle.
