Hanley is....and yes it is a good gym...there are time limits on Heavy lifting in there though i think....Hanley will be along soon to fill you in.....Think Cardio was/is a member too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,396 ✭✭✭COH

Not a member but have trained there a few times. Savage gym, great equipment and some seriously knowledgable people there. Only drawback is not being able to use downstairs after 7pm but that may have changed since I was last there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76 ✭✭gstack

No lifting downstairs after 7pm although they are in the process of trying to change this, you can still squat and bench upstairs after 7 pm so it really only affects oly lifting and deadlifts after 7pm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 370 ✭✭wasabi

OP, feel free to come down and have a look - best bet is to come in early evening as that's busiest time and there'll be someone who can show you around the place - just ask any member to point you at someone on the committee or an experienced member (the Hercs is a co-op, so there aren't staff). Any other questions fire away.

It's probably best to assume the 7pm cutoff is there indefinitely and if it ever gets changed then it's a bonus. It needs to go to court and we're waiting on a date to be set for that, basically.

It's a fantastic gym :) There's quite a few members lurking around these parts (*waves at gstack :D) including myself, Hanley, brutusthebarber, spiral (I think?), wasabi and others that I can't think of right at the moment.

The 7pm time limit for heavy lifting on the ground floor is still there. There's two oly platforms (also used for deadlifting and squats), lots of benches, dumbbells that go up to... actually I haven't a notion, but lots probably :D There's a cardio area upstairs too with treadmills, a rower, steppers and carious machine-y thingy's that I don't tend to go near :p and a punching bag. On the middle floor there's a wrestling mat and carious machines and benches.

The people there are a fantastic bunch, there's powerlifters, weightlifters, and bodybuilders, lots of top class national and international competitors and plenty of people who just like to lift. It's €30 to join and €85 per quarter which is pretty damn savage as well.

Did you have any particular questions about the gym?

its incredible...hercs isnt all about the equipment though...its about the people that train around you...there is alot to be said to being surrounded by athletes instead of muppets....

I always wondered this about Herc's, when you join is there anyway of getting coaching from the guys there or is it a situation where you need to know a guy (or girl!) and agree a time to meet up or something?

I don't have time to join this year before I jet off for the US for the summer but I'm seriously considering it instead of my UCD Crunch membership next year, I'd like to get my oly numbers up and sneaking into UCD's high performance center only goes so far :pac:

you may not get "coaching" per se, but there'll always be people around to help and everyone is really generous will they're time.

Cheers G'em, I'd figured as much, just wanted to make sure! I'll shoot you a PM when I get back in August when I know what I'm up to for next year.

Another question, how busy does the place get or does it even really matter, in that people are happy to work with each other?

Just wondering where is it located? I was having a peep at the website and it didn't seem to say:confused:

That's been in the process since I joined in 2005. I wouldn't hold my breath.

Great Gym, .... the best!! , oldest gym in the country,Its actually 75 years old this year , they spent over €270,000 doing it up last year too, made it even better , and always adding too it , every penny from the members goes back into the club.

.......The dumbbells go up to 75kg, and the cardio room actually has 5 treadmills , an incline trainer (savage piece of kit , a treadmill that goes to 30degrees) , 4 crosstrainers 4 or 5 bikes , a stepper a rower a punch bag loads of ab benches and a vibration machine.

Legal row with neighbor over noise, part of the work done last year was soundproofing the walls an adding rubber floor and putting in an Acoustic vibration proof lifting platform (€40,000), it all done now so the committee are going back to court at present to get the noise injunction lifted, should be sorted within the year.... fingers crossed.

Another question, how busy does the place get or does it even really matter, in that people are happy to work with each other?

Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 - 7 tends to be really busy downstairs, those are the days you're most likely to find the platforms jammed coz there'll be weightlifters and deadlifters sharing space. I couldn't tell you about the rest of the gym because you'll only ever find me on the platforms :o But by and large everyone will be more than happy to work in with each other.

If there are competitions coming up and some folk are getting into serious training territory then they'd probably prefer to just do their thing and get on with it, but you'll know when that's happening and everyone respects a competitor's need for focus.

Thanks a mill G'em, I'll see what the old medschool timetable is looking like for next year and see what I can do about getting down a few times a week.

The hercs is on Lurgan Street, just off Bolton Street. I have been a member for a few years and it's a great gym. It is perfect whether you want to go and do a bit of cardio and some light weights or some serious powerlifting or weightlifting.

You can ask anyone for advice, and there are no annoying instructors telling you deadlifting is bad for your back or don't lean back doing lat pulldowns etc.

It's a club not a commercial gym so there is more a sense of camaraderie there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 139 ✭✭Armedocr

This past year I've been loving the sound of Hercs. As soon as I'm back in Dublin in september I'll be looking into joining this gym.

    How early does it open?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 370 ✭✭wasabi

    Opens at 9am.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 139 ✭✭Armedocr

Really? aw man I was hoping for like 7am or something lol. Stupid college all day :(

You can be sure it will definitely be open at 9am but depending on who is opening that day it may be open earlier!

Sure I'd just go in the evening if that's the case...what's the closing time 9.30/10?

If times are an issue, and you do not want to olympic lift, maybe RAW is an option.

    http://www.rawcondition.com/index.htm

Ask if they have deals going, another weights gym

Finish training at 9pm on weekdays, earlier on weekends (think it's 5 on Sat, 2pm on Sun).

Yeah just wondering if they still do wrestling classes as well, need it for MMA and the gym seems like it could also help with conditioning(obviously):D

It's been there since the late 90's IIRC - a guy in the house next door took legal action due to noise and vibrations affecting his living room.

Only issue I had with hercs was the parking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,800 ✭✭✭The Guvnor

Just read the whole thread - 40k on a platform! That's huge money. They must love the neighbour.

Is the parking free outside hercs?? Much parking there??

If ilived within an hours commute of Hercs, ECB or Raw i'd be training there.

    Man up.

There's free parking for roughly 10 cars, then there's pay and display outside

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,800 ✭✭✭The Guvnor

The issue with parking is simple if you are first in, when you want to leave you will need to ask guys to reverse out or if you are in their way be asked to reverse out.

It's really not ideal i.e. leaving the gym to move your car etc. - better during the day, obviously.:)

I am sure there must be pay and displays nearby now?

So if you were training between 10am and 12am ur more than likely gona get a parking space?? No way am I using Dublin Bus, my life is stressful enough!!!!:D Time is of the essence of the next 2 months between work, study and training/practical study!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,800 ✭✭✭The Guvnor

I would say at 10am you will easily get a space and if memory serves it is possible to park in such a manner than you can get out when you want but others can still get in.
