Injured - walking a 5km race?

I am currently nursing an injury and have been warned not to run on it by my physio. Lower impact exercise (crosstrainer in gym, cycling, walking) is allowed. I had signed up and paid for the 5km St Patricks festival race in Dublin on 14th March.

Someone suggested I walk the race?! My concerns with this are:
    - I looked at the times from the last couple of years and it seems there were very few if any walkers
    - This was supposed to be my first ever race and I was training to do myself proud in it - walking it might be more disappointing than just leaving it?

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Will there be any other walkers? Or know of any 5km races in the Dublin/surrounds in April? (hope to get back up to speed pretty quickly once I'm better)

    Thanks

There will be lots of walkers. If you look at the results, there were lots of walkers last year too. If you walk at 15 minutes per mile (4mph), there will be lots of people finishing asfter you.

The risk is that surrounded by runners, you might feel compelled to do a little more than an easy walk. If you think you're the kind of person who has the self-discipline to ignore the souls running past you, then by all means do it. If you're weak (like me!) go for a nice walk on the pier instead!

There's no doubt that you won't get the same fulfillment from walking it as running 9given your training) but it's still nice to walk around the closed-off streets of Dublin.

hmmm... I think I would find it hard to pace myself under those circumstances. You could be right - a walk on the pier could be better for me! Thanks for the reply!

Better to be safe than sorry :o Get yourself fully recovered and aim for a race end of April, start of May.

    Best of luck :)

There's a 6K in Navan on 14th May and a 5K in Enfield on 25th May. Both easily accessible from the Big Smoke!!! Lots of walkers in the Navan race so a wide spread of paces. Even I don't come last in that race:D.

nice 5k in Leixlip on 8th May. it's a flat route, and there'll be all standards of runners (from 16+min to 60min). details should be up on Le Chéile Athletic Club's website soon. or you can book it on
