So I'm going to Galway for the weekend at the end of the month but want to keep to my plan so I'm looking for somewhere to go for a run while I'm there (prob about 6 miles). Staying in the city centre but happy to drive out a bit for a nice run - any recommendations?

The prom in Salthill is a nice run, start off at the Claddagh and all the way up the prom past Blackrock, past the golf course and back again. Lovely on a nice day, I think out and back is around 6/7 miles

The Prom is always an easy and nice option. If you run from the swans in the Claddagh to the end of the Prom and back, that'll give you about 5 miles. If you can, get out for your run around 8 or 9am - it's such a nice time of day to be out there, and no crowds!

If you're going to run the prom on a weekend day try and do it before 10 in the morning especially if the weather is fine cos it gets quite busy after that.

But yeah for a nice morning run, start at the claddagh at nimmo's pier and follow the path around south park to the prom and then at the end of the prom keep going as a far as knocknacarra cross and turn around and go back the way you came.... should come to about the 5 or 6 mile mark.

The Great Southern/Hotel Meyrick to Blackrock is exactly three miles or 3.02 miles to be precise. Nice six mile round trip. From the steps of the hotel run around the docks in the same direction as the one way system go over Wolfetone Bridge, take the first left then stay by the water, take a left at the swans running on the path around southpark and on out to the wall at Blackrock.

P.S. Beware of the organic matter on the prom. Some dog owners still refuse to show consideration for other other users of the amenity. Grrrr!

thanks everyone for your responses, had thought of the prom alright but figured it wouldn't be long enough - i guess if you add in the bits at the beginning and the end you get up there alright

will try to do it early but I imagine the fine Galway hostelries might try to get in the way of any good intentions :)

Some lovely runs out by Barna, nice few hills and the roads are really quiet.

    Hi William,
I've a few Galway runs here on my mapmyrun profile: http://www.mapmyrun.com/user/298123748743855262/Pudgey22
They all start at salthill near the aquarium. Enjoy!

I just thought of another one that's scenic and easy to follow without much chance of getting lost, unless you are completely hungover. If you drive out the coast road and park in the car park of Barna Church and run into Barna village (1 Mile), turn right at the Twelve Hotel and run straight up the hill to the entrance to Barna golf club(2 Miles) and back again that will give you a nice six miles. You'll be glad to be turning around at the golfclub cause its a good climb up from the village.

Claddagh to the prom and back is just around 6 km, thats the route that was used for a hospice walk last september. All ye that think ye are doing a six mile walk think again
