Yes, and provided the hairdryer fits into a Ryan air sized carry on bag!

They are really after fluids (bottles) and sharp objects (knives) in the searches

There is nothing special about electric appliances. As long as they fit in your bag, you can bring them along.

The only things you need to take out from your bag and have checked separately are liquids, laptops and umbrellas. Everything else stays in the bag and gets x-rayed in one go. Of course, if anything looks suspicious, staff may ask you to unpack your bag.

I regularly travel with lots of electronics. Only once did security personnel get suspicious of so many gadgets and wires and ask me to unpack some of them. In all other cases, a backpack full of electronics was x-rayed and did not raise any suspicions. I do not see why you should have any problems with your hair straightener or hair dryer.

Metal tent pegs? The ends have not got a spike on them. Kind of like long allen keys. Anyone taken them in hand luggage before. Dont wanan have to check a bag in just for these :(

Tent pegs sound risky to me. Airport security has taken a tiny screwdriver off me before (maybe 5cm long, 1 or 2mm diameter). A tent peg is a much bigger piece of sharp metal.

If you can stab yourself with it, it won't go on. That's the rule I generally apply.

Btw, I was coming through Southampton the other day with a big piece of Christmas cake wrappes up in tin foil in my bag. I've taken cakes through before and other than security threatening to confiscate them for their tea break I have never had any problems.

This time though I had to completely empty my bag and get several things x-rayed seperately.

My nintendo DS was in the bag pocket, so the scan showed an electrical item sat on top of a big yellow blob. Apparently this is a classic bomb outline and similar to what the inspectors use. I kept the cake though!
