Loss of signal through video channel on Corus/UPC

    Dear Forum members,

Hopefully somebody can come up with a solution to my problem,

About a month ago our video channel suddenly disappeared overnight. We are subscribers to Chorus/NTL with an analogue feed. I tried re-tuning the channel but the reception was still unbelievably bad. The 16/17 basic channels are fine with no problems but we cannot record any of these stations through the video due to lousy reception from the weak signal.

As our old vcr was playing up I presumed it was a fault with the machine. We managed to get hold of a second vcr in good working order but the video channel was still faulty. We have also managed to acquire a new hdtv - I hoped this would have enabled me to re-tune the video channel but the problem still persists. I have also tried routing the tv and vcr through our second chorus point to see if our main point was faulty but still no change. I have also replaced the connection cables between tv and vcr but still no joy.
I contacted Chorus/UPC but they said that since I was receiving all the channels it wasn't their problem and that the fault must lie with the tv or video. I explained to them that I have replaced these units - they could offer no further help.
I think it is unlikely that the same fault with a weakened signal could happen with two vcr's but am now at a loss of what to do. The answer may be something obvious which I am missing but if anyone out there has any ideas I would be very grateful.

    Thanks for your time

What do you mean by video channel?
Have you got your VCR tuned into your TV like one of the analogue channels? Eg. You turn to Channel 0 to watch a video?
Or do you connect the VCR to your TV through a SCART lead?

Remove the UPC analogue input to your VCR only leaving the lead connected from the VCR to your TV. Has your video channel came back? . If it has one of the analogue channels is clashing with the frequency your VCR is outputting. On older VCR's a screw on the back can alter this frequency, later models allowed this to be changed in the setting.

VCR is tuned into analogue channel 0. If the coax cable is unplugged it is possible to watch a video, but cannot tape any channels.

    thanks

As DingDong said, you will have to change the "RF Out" channel on your VCR and then re-tune it on your TV. It's possible your cable area has recently been upgraded, or UPC have started broadcasting something on the same channel your VCR is outputting to your TV on so the two are interfering.

Most VCRs allow you change this in the setup menu.

Thanks for your all your help Dingdong and Kensington - I managed to sort it out.
as you said there was either interference or UPC playing around so I retuned the video channel on the TV. It was previously coming in as channel 23 so I just picked another vacant position (32). Back to normal now but the digital switchover is inevitable within the next year or two.

    Thanks again

Sorry to drag this back up but I've a similar problem.

NTL analog split via, 2way, one into TV (CRT) and the other into (PVR)

This is mainly so that people who are able to manage the PVR remote can just use the TV remote.

The signal on the PVR is mostly fine, some channels are poor as they ever been. But the signal into the TV is dire. Is this ajust a problem with the cable?

If I upgrade to digital, can I still use the splitter for the analog PVR, and will NTL fix the analog signal. Or are they avoiding this now, just pushing people to Digital?

BostonB I take it's your own PVR. You shouldn't need a splitter just take the output from the wall(outlet box) into the PVR and then using the output form the PVR into the TV. If there is a problem with the analogue service you will more than likly have problems with digital and of course they will fix the problem for you. One thing to try first to check the signal is remove the split and plug the cable directly into the TV. Best to get a service call booked.

One other thing to note is digital tv works out cheaper. The basic digital is 20euro as Vs 25euro for analogue. If you do go digital I would recommend the HD DVR as its a fantastic bit of kit if its available to you.
