Involuntary hospitalisation/commitment...

...say trying to put a third party into care for drink or drug abuse. Anyone know where I can get a synopsis of the law? Pretty sure it has changed recently and the days of getting someone hospitalised on the word of a family member are gone, but not sure.

    Thanks.

Great, thanks for that. Though not sure that covers drink/drug abuse, but it may be a pointer anyway.

A person can not be committed solely for addiction to intoxicants. As a non relative you have a very limited role.
section 8 Mental Health Act 2001
8.—(1) A person may be involuntarily admitted to an approved centre pursuant to an application under section 9 or 12 and detained there on the grounds that he or she is suffering from a mental disorder.
    (2) Nothing in subsection (1) shall be construed as authorising the involuntary admission of a person to an approved centre by reason only of the fact that the person—
    (a) is suffering from a personality disorder,
    (b) is socially deviant, or
    (c) is addicted to drugs or intoxicants.
