    Hi there everyone,
I have a 96 fiesta - on it's last legs so am going to change. I live in a busy area with a lot of passing drunk traffic at weekends so cars often vandalised but the scrappage deals make a new car very attractive at the moment.
What r people's views on scrappage deals? It seems great being able to get a small car bran new for under 10k compared to a 5 yo for half that!

all comes down to whether you want to spend 10k!

do you tend to keep your cars for ages and do you do much mileage?

Good cars are available for around 3k a newer 1.25 Fiesta would be easily got.

don't do much mileage and yes i do tend to keep car for years - well any car i ever got is never worth anything much to sell on

Dunno, depends on whether you value the status/novelty value of a new car.
Certainly from a money POV a cheap low miler would last ages and you won't be upset if someone wallops it.

You can get a brand new Fiat Panda for €7k under the scrappage scheme but the vandalism problem still remains. Sad and depressing as it sounds but a 2010 reg car might draw more attention and begrudgery from drunken scum than say a 04/05.

Save your money - buy a decent older car for less.

At that rate for a panda why would i buy a 5 or 6 year old car? I'm thinking of going new - not for staus or anything but because it might be of some value in a few years and i won't be worrying about history etc

A Panda for €7000 is looney value. Still after a year where you park it if it's as bad as you say it may well be dented and scratched. After 3 to 5 years it may look quite tatty so be worth very little. I'd sooner spend €2000 or so on a decent old supermini and not be arsed if it's slapped by a drunk or not.
