Am looking to replace my clapped-out CR-V with something with a little more welly, was looking around at the usual suspects (Trooper, Land Cruiser, etc.).

Got shown a Hyundai Terracan today which looked okay, drove fine. Anyone any good/bad experiences with these? Run a mile? They look deceptively cheap...

The fuel pump has a nasty habit of sh1tting itself and the metal frgmeents stick in the injectors and fuel lines and tank. Mucho bucks to get that sorted.
They're powerful enough and cheap but personally I wouldn't buy one.

The fail rate seems to be about 1 in 5 over a 60,000 mile period but they have failed at as low as 20,000 miles. you could prevenitavely replace it when you buy one I suppose but I think they're a bit of a soft jeep and not worth the hassle.

Sound, cheers for that. How is it for parts, I hear they're a bastard to get parts for. They're not sold new afaik.

What would you recommend for a 5-8k budget? I'm mainly looking on carzone for those, troopers and land cruisers. Not sure what else is worth getting (it's for mostly road work, although the odd field or hill, leisure use so not going to be pulling anything mostly). Would prefer a longish wheel base too as it'll beused for kipping in the odd time.

    Don't touch a 3.0l trooper with a barge pole

you can get parts no hassle from Hyundai, just finding something like a diff or gearbox or engine or injectors etc would be tricky second hand

    Right so :-)

I've looked at one Land Cruiser so far, which was filthy and in bits, as are I suspect most of the ones in my price range (a bad sign is when you have to hook up another jeep and a battery pack to start it).

Looking at another Terracan tomorrow, an '05. One I looked at today seemed to lack a somewhat essential accessory -- a warranty.

Cruisers are huge money. I'd look at an older Hilux Surf 3.0 or Pajero 2.8 if I were you.

    Presume you're going commercial?

Yep, don't need the seats and the tax savings aren't too bad either :-)

My Paj hasn't missed a beat in the few months that I've had it. I'd go for something old-tech and Japanese (well, I did!)

The Hilux surf is hard enough to find in a manual 3.0 though. but if you find one within your budget def have a look

Pile of dirt - If you can get a late model 3.1 trooper say 98 and if your lucky you mite mind an odd 99 one, but there rare, anyone that has a good one is keepin it.
    the 3.1 is bullet proof.
