    Hi Guys,

I often look in on this forum however this is my first post here. I'm hoping to tap into some of your wisdom / expierence.

In the next couple of months I expect to be in the market for a good s/h car. I need something to take the three kids and all associated trappings on a daily basis plus something which will be able to do a bit of towing if required on the home farm and something which has a few creature comforts:) for those long journeys when required.

I have always for some reason had a soft spot for the Audi Allroad [and this from someone who never liked estates of any kind]. I've been keeping an eye out for Allroads between 00 & 04 on the websites. There seem to be some reasonable deals out there on this era allroad and you seem to get a hell of a lot of car for the money. I would like to go to the newer shape allroad but the budget won't allow that max 12k.

My question is are these cars expensive bedfellows? I've heard some stories about airbags for the suspension on these cars and the costs of replacing same. Are there other common problems with these allroads that a guy should know before taking the plunge.

Thanks in advance for any help / info.

People harp on about Air suspension failures as if its something the AR has the exclusive rights on. Consider it like this, any good Estate has self levelling rear suspension, the AR has it on the front too.

Otherwise, they are good, if very floaty with the stock wheels and Anti Roll Bars, both of which can be changed while still maintaining good off/poor road abilities. The sidewall height is huge, so 18" on a AR is more "tyre" than 17" on a regular car.

Ive read the 2.5TDI isnt a wonderful engine, if you go down the TDI route try ensure you get the 180bhp version (the last of the 2.5s, maybe its standard on the AR, I had the petrol model).
