From here to Teaching?

I would like to become a secondary school teacher but I am not sure exactly how to get to that stage from where I am now. I have a B.Eng Ordinary Degree, I also have a Nat cert. in I.T. Support and a Nat Cert. in Professional Cookery.
I had to stop at the ordinary degree as there were no suitable Level 8 courses available to me in the college I went to. I was thinking of doing an Open University course to get my Honors Degree and then to try to get on to the H Dip. in Secondary teaching.
Can I take this path or do I have to do a dedicated teaching degree somewhere?
If I can take this path, are there certain subjects that I would need to take in my O.U. course to enable me to teach in Ireland?
    Thanks.

It's not so much getting a degree, you'll have to get a degree that's recognised by the teaching council, and have a subject you can teach. Your Cookery and IT Cert won't get you a teaching qualification, so your best bet is your engineering degree. What kind of engineering degree is it? There aren't many accepted for teaching purposes and there is another thread in this forum at the moment where a teacher's engineering degree was recognised and now it's not. It's a minefield
