Has it a full BMW service history?

Did you buy it from a dealer or private, if dealer then when?

If the work had already been done how long was the new big end bearing guranteed for? if at all?

Is it a known issue with the M3? a big end bearing to go like that suggests lack of maintenance to me

yes its a known problem with them. most 01-03 m3's were recalled to have the work done

Don't think your car should have been affected by that recall at all. The recall was actually done before 2003, so why your car had it at 70k is a bit odd.

Unless the car has a full BMW service history, they're unlikely to help you with any costs under a goodwill gesture - but if you're saying it does has the FBMWSH, and they've been done on schedule, then its worth getting onto customer services and seeing what they have to say.

    Heres details on the recall:
Did BMW recall E46 M3's for engine failure related issues?
Technically no: BMW issues a "service action." To quote BMWNA, "The problem has been identified as contamination of the engine lubricating system during assembly in combination with unfavorable tolerances in the engine oil pump for the M3 coupe/convertible produced from October 2001 through February 2002. These cars require replacement of the engine oil pump and as a precautionary measure, replacement of the connecting rod bearings. In addition, the engine control module will be programmed with the latest software, which includes improved cold start characteristics. We ask that you contact your authorized BMW center to arrange a service appointment to have this service action carried out. Your vehicle can still be driven with no immediate need to have the repairs carried out. The service action will take approximately one days work, however, the actual time will vary with center scheduling. BMW of North America, LLC, will cover all necessary repair costs related to this action as well as providing you with alternate transportation if necessary. After the service action is performed on your M car, a 1,200 mile break-in period must be observed. Do not exceed 5,500 engine rpm or 105 mph road speed during this period. Please observe your local & state maximum speed limits. " - This "service action" is being done by VIN number and generally effects 2002 M3's manufactured between October of 2001 and February 2002.

    Heres details on the recall:

cheers for this.. more than likely it was manufactured then but not registered until 03 hence fitting into the bracket for recall. just read they gave a 100,000 mile garanty in america after the work was carried out, mayb that will apply here

Even if it does, it will be subject to the cars having been maintained as per the manufacturers service schedule. Does the car have a FSH?

    irrelevant.

all you are doing here is trolling to claim he should have got this that and the other checked. Cue lots of others claiming they same. Result: thread ruined.

He bought the car, how he bought it with the problem does not help the current situation.

Check your build date - its on the nearside strut.

Even if it did sit around as you suggest though, did I read it right when you said the recall wasn't done until 70k miles were on the clock? BMW customer service will be able to provide you full details by the way - they're actually very helpful.

Don't assume anything when it comes to guarantees that US owners received though. All US M3's has their bremi manufactured coil packs replaced FOC, with a lifestime guarantee on the replacement bosch items - no such offer was given here, despite the coil packs going being an exceptionally common fault.
