Gluten Intolerance

Well, I suspect I may be gluten intolerent, I throw up any time I eat anything with wheat in it!

So just wondering what ideas people would have for quick snacks without wheat. I'm finding it very difficult to buy things when I need food quickly. In this country it's all sandwiches and breaded things. I still want to snack healthily and the only option left is chips, which doesn't really fit the bill.

So, any ideas for gluten free portable meal ideas?

Have a read of that. You can get a limited range of gluten free foods in the supermarkets.

There is a small place in parkwest, Dublin where you can buy things.

    Fruit :o

Nah I don't think so either. If you want some thing 'breaded' I'm afraid you'll have to just think ahead and bring a packed lunch. Gluten Free bread is cac anyways.

Otherwise Tesco do some eat out of a packet stuff in their 'Free from' section, but you'd need a micro wave or something.

Rice cakes with topping (like nutella, or banana)

Sorry they are not great suggestions I know. But life without bread is well....crap. Thankfully chocolate is great to help with the loss

I was in a similar situation to you smoggy with similar symptoms when I was diagnosed with wheat intolerance, it is pretty hard to get by if you are looking for something quick to eat.

You can get a lot of essentials in any supermarket, the selection has improved immensely in the last two years. I found it very tough to give up breads and the like but some types that you can buy aren't too different, I eat spelt loaves now which seem to be getting a lot more popular these days and can be gotten in most bakeries now. I don't know of any in Belfast and the closest I know of is The Shelbourne in Newry.

The other option is to bake your own, if you havent done it upto this point I'd advise you to try it. I find it very helpful because you can be 100% certain that you are eating the right food for your needs.

If your'e in college or working you should always make sure that you have something in your bag that you can eat, whether it's fruit/salad/whatever, this will help you a lot.

It's a very big change when you start doing these things but it's got to be done and it will make everything a lot easier, the first two or three months are pretty hard but after a while you don't even notice that your'e not eating wheat.

You REALLY need to go see a doctor if you haven't done so already. Self diagnosis isn't a good idea when your symptoms are as severe as actually vomiting, also gluten isn't only in wheat so other grains would be triggering reactions too if you have gluten intolerance.

First off get yourself checked for gluten probs... simple blood test but may take 3 weeks for result.

Salads are good (M&S).... check labels of prepared boxes first though, often gluten in the dressings and pasta often in stuff. Dunnes Stores self service salad bars actually mark the GF ones. Or make up your own....You can get good GF pasta so could make up cold salad, or have to add to some bought stuff to add carbs.

Fresh soups are often fine... just bring your own bread. Smoothies can be quite filling for lunch on the move....

    crisps/cheese/apple/ yogurt/tuna/ meat.

There are some savoury rice cartons that just need boiling water added, get in healthfood shop

Itsabagal do a GF option, check out location of various branches.

Juvela do half way decent bread rolls but need to be microwaved for half minute first. Best option is to make your own bread with Juvela again mix, then bag up slices ready to go places.

Sorry chips are frowned on as other things such as battered/coated stuff done in same oil so contaminated.

Yes snack food away from home is the worst.....

Cully & sully or home made soup, fruit, something like hummus on corn cakes, also some charcuterie or smoked salmon with the corn cakes. rice and corn cakes don't fill you up and are full of calories so you're better off eating them with something else. Salad with a honey and lemon dressing, some cheese and maybe some meat, preferably not processed.
I wouldn't necessarily eat gluten free food as it mightn't be enough for coeliacs, your vomiting is similar to mine so go to a doc and get sorted.
