Hi, I have applied for a place as a student Paramedic in the UK. I have got passed the application and written assessment stages. The final day is Fitness, Medical, Driving Test and Interview.
If anybody has gone through this process before and has any help or tips for me it would be much appreciated. Cheers

Im a registered PHECC EMT here in Ireland and also a member of one of the voluntaries. Also am i correct in thinking that the irish EMT qualification is equal to Ambulance Care Assistant (ACA) in the UK??

If you trained with the NATC then your ICHD trained which is the equivalent to the UK Ambulance Technician

    G'day

I applied to the East of England Ambulance Service last year. Passed all the interviews and tests and will be starting next week in my new job. Can't wait for it.

The driving test was easy, just a spin around the block in a mini bus and then reverse into a parking spot. Then they asked me a few questions about rules of the road and sign posts, they were pretty easy questions but they do have some different sign posts over there than we have so it might be worth doing a bit of study on things like that.

The medical test was just a questionnaire to fill out, a blood test and then a quick history of any medical conditions or vaccines I have had.

Fitness test consisted of a back strenght test, hand grip strenght test and a sit and reach test. They were all easy to do. I think they just use them to make sure you dont have a dodgy back or anything like that before you even start in the service.

The interview was pretty much the same as any other interview I have ever done. They'll ask you about relevant experience you might have. If you have experience of working as an EMT over here than you'll be grand.

Where abouts did you apply to ?? I'll be based in Cambridge once Ive finished my initial 3 month training period.

Sorry for delay on this only saw the post now.

Irish PHECC EMT is roughly equivilent of ACA/ECA but bear in mind titles and scope of practice change depending where you are.

Irish PHECC Paramedic is roughly equivilent of IHCD Ambulance Technician with experience

Irish PHECC Advanced Paramedic is roughly equivilent of UK Paramedic.

Just bear in mind there are variations and somethings you can do in Ireland at that level you cannot do in UK (Morphine is one) and the same in reverse.

No problems, just one slight change to be made I have heard of some places in UK doing a 1 week ECA course, this is NOT the kind of course im referring to but a proper NHS 5 or so weeks long one (they also do 3 weeks driving on top)

    Hi Mick,

I have applied for a position as a Student Ambulance Paramedic. <mod snip>
Were you placed in the ‘successful applicant pool’? if so, how long did you have to wait before starting your training?

    Gday Saz Saz

It took me about a year to get from applying for the job to actually starting the job. But that was only because it took me 3 atttempts to pass my bloody C licence test :-)

Otherwise it would have taken about 6 months probably.

It all depends on the Ambulance Service that you have applied for really. As soon as you get the green light thatyou have passed all the stages of interviews and assessments then you just have to wait until they get funding to start a class. They can normally give you a good guess as to when they think they might get funding. Then they try to give you about 1 months notice.

Have you done your assessment and interview ??

I have the C and C1 and will be starting the EMT in May.

I'm stuck at the moment tho.

Should i do the EMT with the PHECC for €1,300 (6 weeks)

Or do it through the Red Cross for €400? (think 6 months)

    What would ye guys do?

    Nicola.

You might need to do your D1 as this was needed in the past. As for the EMT course its €2,500. Are you a memeber of the Red Cross? Because as far as I am aware they are only doing conversion courses with their current memebers from EMFR to EMT and this is an in house course. Open to be corrected on that.

Yes i am a member of the red cross.

The course i'm in at the moment is Nursing/ fire and ambulance. The Galway crowd will be coming to our college in may and will run a PHECC standard EMT for €1,300. (we got a discount).

I applied for Belfast too tho.

    Nicola.

Stick with it and do your EMT with that crowd from galway.

Beware though, there is very little, if any work going for EMTs in the privates.

Word has it that they are letting EMTs go in favor of foreign trained Paras.

Back on topic I have a question for the existing members of the ambulance service. I got offered a place on a Bsc (hons) Paramedic Practice degree course in a UK university (I started a thread on it a few months ago). I was just wondering if, after my 3 years, if I come back and phecc recognise it as a paramedic or AP level over here, what are the chances of me getting work with the HSE here, essentially what I'm asking is has it been done much before?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 41 COS1

Just got accepted on a Student Paramedic course in the UK, Startinig in July! I cant wait.:D And I was one of those who didnt get past the interview stage with the HSE last year, (this week last year) Maybe a blessing eh?! Best of luck to all those waiting on the pannel, you deserve better. Maybe now with the news that the Garda Siochana are going to recruit again thats good news for the Para`s too.

    Cheers.
