I understand a Dell Core Duo is faster than a Dual Core, but how do you know which is faster between

    Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Processor T4400 (2.2GHz, 800MHz, 1MB cache)

    Inspiron 1545 Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 (2.1GHz,800MHz,2MB)

I always though it was the 2.2Ghz that decided the speed in which case the forst one would be faster.

    Please help

The Passmark software people do benchmarks on Intel & AMD CPUs....results here:

    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

    The T4400 gets a mark of 1514
    The T6500 gets 1428

This means the T4400 is a bit faster - but not enough that you'd actually notice in normal usage.

    Cheers, FoxT

    thanks for that

In the real world, it'd actually likely be the other way around - T6500 faster than T4400. Having twice the L2 cache (200%) makes up for the ~5% clockspeed difference. See attachment - it beats it by a tiny amount in most benchmarks.

But again, the difference is so tiny that it'll be unnoticeable.

Go for the cheapest! The difference is so small that it's not worth paying for.

    Hi Paddy,

Graphics Card - If you can say for sure that you'll never be using it for gaming then i wouldnt bother but the upgrade is only €25 so i would tend to go for it. Its not a top of the range graphics card by any means but it will be a hell of a lot better than the intel integrated one.

Wireless - not too important really & the standard model will do you just fine.

Bluetooth - i would go for it personally cos its handy for linking your mobile phone but otherwise you probably wont use it.

    Hope this helps...

    Q

EDIT - sorry my mistake, the graph card is €50 but id still go for it (me being a gamer and all :) )

Everything else looks like its pretty good value.

its 50 euro to upgrade graphics card - I dont game but use it for my camcorder etc. Do you think it is necessary to buy it

thanks for advice on bluetooth - ill buy it.

What do you think of rest.

More than I wanted to spend, anything i can get rid of that is a waste of money.

    Expensive

If you do a bit of Video Editing then the more advanced graphics card would be nice but to be honest you will probably get away with the standard integrated card fine.

One thing i would consider is seeing if you can switch the 500Gb(5400rpm) hard drive for one which is 7200rpm even if it is a little bit smaller than 500Gb. Apart from that i dont have any other suggestions!

I had a scan through the rest of your spec and i dont see where you can trim anymore really. If your getting all that for under €600 then your doing well i think!

didnt get that option on the hard drive. that was the only choice was that speed.

Does it make much difference or is it a deal breaker?

Thanks again - might even buy a fancy color

Its by no means a must have. If the option isn't available its not a deal breaker - id go ahead with the laptop, you're getting a pretty good deal imo!

    best of luck with it...

    Paddy,
I've merged your two threads together, it really does help if you keep your stuff in the one thread, it's easier to understand. I've tidied up your posts as well, again it's better to have one post with paragraphs rather than numerous posts all over the place.
    Apologies for the nitpicking!

Now, as for the upgrades, what price does the machine come to with all the above? As often you can buy a better laptop with better all round specs, then starting with a "cheaper" laptop and upgrading on the dell site. It doesn't make much sense i know, but it's just the way it is.

Cant seem to find another way.

Thanks - Ill be neater in future - great boards

I was surprised at the passmark result - I was also expecting the extra cache would trump the slightly faster clock. Possibly some difference in instruction sets between the 2 chips, or, more likely, a difference in the algorithms used to test them. Where did you get your results from voodu? I am shopping for a PC myself & interested to see if here are significant benchmark differences out there...

    Thanks,

    FoxT
